Cohen’s method

It is likely that Cohen s method is a homolytic reaction (Sec. 8.6). The catalysis can be represented by Schemes 10-7 to 10-9. The last step of this mechanism is based on competitive hydroxy-/halo-de-diazoniations investigated by Hanson et al. (1991) and discussed in Section 10.5.

Where there are data available over a range of temperatures there is little to choose between the pragmatic approach and the more theory oriented methods of Cohen. However, Cohen s method probably provides a more satisfactory basis for extrapolation and it also provides a useful method for estimation of rate constants (see later in this section).

Cohen s method of determining lattice parameters is even more valuable when applied to noncubic substances, since, as we saw in Sec. 11 -2, straightforward graphical extrapolation cannot be used when there is more than one lattice parameter involved. Cohen s method, however, provides a direct means of determining these parameters, although the equations are naturally more complex than those needed for cubic substances. Hydroxy-de-diazoniations are well-known standard reactions for the replacement of aromatic amino groups by hydroxy groups. An aqueous solution of the diazonium salt is added slowly to boiling 5-35% (v/v) aqueous sulfuric acid. The hydroxy-de-diazoniation may fail in the presence of reactive substituents in the o-position to the diazonio group (24 references mentioned by Cohen " in 1977 ). Cohen s method of adding large amounts of Cu(N03)2 (15-100-fold excess) and CU2O in equimolar amounts, relative to diazonium ions, is today hardly recommendable anymore due to environmental reasons.

Finally, in Section V, we compare the results of Bogolubov,3 Choh and Uhlenbeck, and Cohen8 with the generalized Boltzmann equation in Prigogine s formalism. The equivalence of the two methods is well known for the two-body and Cohen s three-body results 23 the demonstration of the same indentity is extended to the three-body results of Choh and Uhlenbeck and to Cohen s four-body expression. We also present the principles of the extension of this comparison for arbitrary concentration. 

If one puts this result in the expression (92) which proceeds from Cohen s results, one retrieves the equation (85) of the Prigo-gine theory. This establishes the equivalence between these two methods of formulating the generalization of the Boltzmann equation for the collisions of four particles.
