Cognitive capacity

A wide variety of tests have been used in sleep deprivation experiments ranging from simple tests of reaction time (e.g., Refs. 1,2,13) to complex tasks of higher-order cognitive capacity and PFC function (e.g., Refs. 9,14,15). The diversity of performance tests available for use in performance testing leads to a fundamental question What are the criteria for an effective neurocognitive assay under conditions of sleep deprivation, where effective means theoretically meaningful, empirically sensitive, and practically useful ...

Neuropsychological procedures are used in an effort to provide an unbiased estimate of the individual s cognitive capacity. In neurology and psychiatry, these tests have been used to help clinicians to better diagnose patients and to provide them with better treatments. We chose to use a fixed battery in our effort to assess neurobehavioral changes that might be associated with the chronic use of marijuana. That battery included tests of language skills, visual and spatial memory, attention, concentration, executive function, visuo-constructive skills, manual dexterity, simple reaction time, and complex reaction time in subjects in our studies. The various tests used are listed below.

Patients, or advocates, must be able to intervene. If they are very sick, have limited cognitive capacity or are in a very frail state, it is clearly unreasonable... 

Finally, there are some points of interest identified here that can be considered for fiirther research for example the role of distracters- visual or auditory- in alleviating boredom and thereby increasing capability and concentration, or acting to distract when greater cognitive capacity is needed and thereby decreasing safety margins.
