Polydimethylsiloxane is the base polymer for silicone formulations employed in outdoor high voltage systems, not only in the case of coatings but also for composite insulators [3, 9-11]. It is a widely applied polymer within the silicone family [42], with remarkable and sometimes unique properties, which enable applications not only in outdoor installations but also in many technical fields [42-47]. The polymer chain is composed of silicone oxygen bonds, accompanied by two side methyl groups connected to the siHcone atom, as shown in Figure 1.4, where the monomer unit is illustrated. [Pg.6]

Figure 33.2 shows XPS spectra of the surfaces of the TMS plasma polymer film deposited on (Ar + H2) plasma-pretreated steel (a, b, c) and on O2 plasma-pretreated steel (d, e, f). As shown in the spectra, the surface of the plasma film is functional in nature with functional groups of C-OH, C=0, and Si-OH. Two films basically ended up with the same surface structure. This is also confirmed by XPS analysis of the film during the film aging in air after the film deposition, which indicated that the film surfaces were saturated with a fixed surface structure after a few hours of air exposure [4]. This is due to a well-known phenomenon that the residual free radicals of the plasma polymer surface reacted with oxygen after exposure to air [5]. Curve deconvolution of C Is peaks showed structures of C-Si, C-C, C-0, and C=0. The analysis clearly shows a silicon carbide type of structure, which is consistent with the IR results. The functional surfaces of TMS films provide bonding sites for the subsequent electrodeposition of primer (E-coat). [Pg.724]

Virtually all LC chiral stationary phases are either chemically bonded to, or are coated on, the surface of silica gel. Silica gel is an amorphous, highly porous, partially hydrated form of silica which is a substance made from the two most abundant elements in the earth s crust, silicon and oxygen. The silica gel used in LC can take two forms, spherical and irregular. Although irregular silica that has been ground by air jet abrasion is well rounded, and very similar in physical form to spherical silica, spherical silica is seen as a state of the art material and thus is the silica most commonly used. The process of making silica of either form is complex [1] and is not relevant to discuss here, but the properties of silica are indeed important. [Pg.265]

Plasma treatment of microchannels can be useful for improving the functionality of microdevices. For example, previous studies have shown that PDMS microchannels can be made hydrophilic by the addition of silane molecules with polar head groups [6]. In this process (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane (3-MPS) was absorbed to PDMS to increase the hydrophilic properties of microchannels. Additionally, plasma polymerization has been used to induce in the long-term hydrophilic surface modification by covalently bonding a polymer layer to the surface. Barbier et al. [7] describe a method based on plasma polymerization modification with acrylic acid coatings. First, argon plasma pretreatment was used to activate trace oxygen molecules in the chamber, which partially oxidize the top layer of the substrate.
