Early work was based on concentrating the radium from the seawater sample by adding barium and coprecipitating with barium sulfate. This concentration procedure has been replaced by one involving the extraction of radium from seawater on acrylic fibre coated with manganese dioxide [19,20] (Mn fibres). Radon can be isolated from radium by several methods. An aqueous solution of radium salt such as radium bromide is heated, liberating radon. Radioactive bombardment then decomposes water to oxygen and hydrogen. Radon is separated from the gaseous mixture by condensation in tiny tubes placed in liquid air. The heaviest member of the alkaline earth metals is radium (Ra), a naturally radioactive element discovered by Pierre and Marie Cnrie in 1898. Radinm was initially isolated from the nraninm ore pitchblende, in which it is present as approximately 1.0 g per 7.0 metric tons of pitchblende. How many atoms of radinm can be isolated from 1.75 X 10 g pitchblende (1 metric ton = 1000 kg) One of the early uses of radium was as an additive to paint so that watch dials coated with this paint wonld glow in the dark. Eldorado made a deal with U.S. Radium to market some of that firm s products in the Commonwealth. One of these was Undark, a radium-based luminous compound. The arrangement also encompassed compounds used in the manufacture of television and cathode-ray tubes. The biggest seller amor these products was the lonotron, a radioactive anti-static device that used the ability of alpha radiation to ionize air to prevent formation of static electricity. It was employed in industries where flammable vapours or materials could be ignited by sparks from static electricity. Textile and paper mills were major customers, but the lonotron helped in the operation of coating and packaging equipment as well. It enabled manufacturers to increase the speed of their machines while reducing the risk of fire. [Pg.20]

At the centre of the lonotron was a piece of metal foil that was impregnated with radium and then coated to trap emissions of radon gas. The foil was mounted in an aluminum housing, which provided shielding and directed the radiation. The lonotron could be fabricated in different sizes but was usually long and narrow. In a typical installation it would bridge the width of a conveyer belt at a distance from one to three inches over the moving material. Tariffs had a significant impact on how Eldorado structured its lonotron deal with U.S. Radium. After some discussions, customs allowed Eldorado to ship radium to the United States duty-free if it were destined to return to Canada as part of an lonotron.
