Although the majority of chiral CEC—MS applications still involve packed columns, few reports on chiral OT-CEC-MS are found in recent literature. The feasibility of coupling OT-CEC (using a short Chirasil-Dex-coated capillary column) to MS and MS/MS for trace analysis of hexobarbital enantiomers in biological fluids was reported by Schurig and Mayer. More recently, Kamande et al. investigated polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) coating as a new medium for the separation of chiral analytes, and PEM-coated capillaries were successfully coupled to ESI/MS for the stereoselective analysis of five /1-blockers.

Mayer et al. [43] compared their results generated at a micro structured monolith (see Section 2.4.3) with literature data [137]. The degree of conversion and the hydrogen selectivity of the rhodium monolith outperformed both metal-coated foam monoliths, Pt-Rh gauzes and extruded monoliths. This was partially attributed to the higher activity of the rhodium monolith, but also to the lower cross-sectional channel area of the metallic monolith, which reduced mass transfer limitations, and to the improved heat conductivity.

One major use of polyesters, the alkyd coating resins, is based on random prepolymers reacted with unsaturated fatty acids. Gelation phenomena have been studied extensively and the gelation theories of Carothers, Flory, and Stock-mayer were developed with polyester random prepolymers. Only recently, Gordon (iJ, 12) has extended the gelation theory to the structopendant polyester system cross-linked by vinyl monomers.

Although the concept that sedimentary organic matter is strongly associated with mineral surfaces has stood the test of time, the monolayer-equivalent hypothesis has not. It has been deduced from the energetics of gas adsorption onto minerals from continental margin sediments that generally less than 15% of the surfaces of typical sedimentary minerals are coated with organic matter (Mayer, 1999).
