The acid is used in synthesis of - rubber chemicals, pharmaceuticals and dryers for coatings (- drying oils). 

Other Derivatives and Applications. Copolymerization of DCPD with other unsaturated substances has received wide attention, and several useful appHcations have been developed. With drying oils (qv) thermal copolymerization leads to the production of resinous products, the so-called bodied oils, that give improved drying and result in paint and varnish coatings of greater resistance to weathering.

Alkyds These are the most widely used of all air-oxidizing coatings and have the broadest use both industrially and domestically. They are usually classified according to the proportion of drying oil to synthetic resin (known as oil length ). The oil length influences all properties (e.g. chemical resistance, viscosity, flexibility and hardness). 

There are three main types of filter viscous, dry and HEPA. Viscous filters are normally a coarse weave of glass, plastic or metal strands coated with oil. As the air passes through the filter, particles impact against the material and are held in the oil. The panels are normally washable and can be re-used after re-oiling. Viscous filters provide good general filtration for air inlet to buildings. 

If an elastic or insufficiently hard primer or paint has been applied under a less elastic top coat, or if the first coat (or set of coats) of oil-base paint has been second-coated before it is completely dry, not only will the paintwork remain soft for an unduly fong period, but cracking will also follow, as the upper layer cannot follow the movement. If the last coat is very thick this fault will frequently manifest itself in the form of alligatoring, i.e. the formation of cracks which do not penetrate all the films down to the substrate, and which may be present in the top layer only.
