Polyethylene is readily fabricated by all methods of thermoplastic processing. The principal methods used are film and sheet extrusion, extrusion coating, injection molding, blow molding, pipe extrusion, wire and cable extrusion coating, rotomolding, and hot melt and powder coatings. [Pg.1339]

An example of an exception to the use of a screw operating extruder occurs when a very low melt plastic such as PTFE (polytetrafluoro-ethylene) is to be used where its specialty properties are needed. PTFE does not easily melt, particularly in the production of heavy wall PTFE wire coatings, so ram extrusion is used. Ram extrusion is used for these wire and cable jobs and also for producing rods, tubes, and large round solid cakes that are later skived to make PTFE film. [Pg.262]

Products A wide range of bimodal and unimodal products, with a full control of comonomer distribution, can be produced, with densities ranging from 918 to 970 kg/m3 and melt flowrate from less than 0.1 to over 100. The molecular weight distribution can be controlled from narrow to broad. Advanced properties are tailor-made applications such as pipe strength, film bubble stability as well as high ESCR and stiffness in blow molding. Other special applications include extrusion coating and wire cable. [Pg.85]

From the late 1930s through the end of World War II, polyethylene was primarily used for the manufacture of wire and cable in support of the war effort. Scientists and engineers were involved in the extrusion-coating process required for wire and cable applications. Figure 6.2 shows the extrusion equipment used to coat wire with a polyethylene jacket. Note that the application date in Britain was November 3, 1941, long before the patent was issued in the United States as U.S. Patent 2,384,224 dated September 4,1945. [Pg.308]

Due to its balance of strength, oil resistance, inflammability, increased resistance to ozone, ageing and weathering, polychloroprene finds widespread industrial use. Typical uses are V-belts, conveyor belts, wire and cable jacketing, footwear, wet suit applications, coated fabrics, inflatables, hoses, extrusions and many other goods. Adhesives are also a strong market area. [Pg.94]
