Steel, whether in structural form or as a sheet, can be protected by many different coating systems, such as paint, plastic materials, concrete and other metals, either singly or in combination (such as a metal coating followed by a paint system, or a plastic coating). Reactive prepolymers used as binders are produced by acrylation of oligomers, such as epoxy resins, urethanes, polyesters, silicones, oligo-buta-diene, melamine derivatives, cellulose, and starches. Prepolymers are the principal ingredients of coating formulations and largely determine the basic properties of the coating. Examples of industrially important acrylated prepolymers are in Table 5.9. 

Materials that form a permeable membrane include fats, bee wax, carnauba wax, cetyl alcohol, cetylsteryl alcohol, zein, acrylic esters, silicone elastomers, and ethylcellulose (14). Aqueous dispersions of water-insoluble polymers are commonly used for sustained-release film coatings. Examples of commercially available aqueous polymer dispersions include Surelease-containing ethylcellulose, Aquacoat-containing... 

The protection of a chemical species by containing it in small droplets, particles, or bubbles covered by a coating. Example the encapsulation of liquid within vesicles. 

Tunicated bulbs are completely covered by broad scales which form concentric coatings. Examples Onion, Squill, Daffodil. 

Exalbuminous seeds are those in which the albumen is stored in the embryo during the growth of the seed. Such seeds show the fleshy embryo taking up all or nearly all the room within the seed coat. Examples Ph3rsostigma, Amygdala, etc. 

Hydrophilic polymers can be adsorbed onto the capillary surface to generate a neutral semipermanent coating. Examples include polysaccharides.
