Coagulation selection

Inks, quick-setting n. Inks for letterpress and offset which dry by either filtration, coagulation, selective absorption or often a combination of these with some of the other drying methods. The vehicles are generally special resin-oil combinations, which, after the inks have been printed, separate into a solid material, which remains on the surface as a dry film and an oily material which penetrates rapidly into the stock. [Pg.526]

In order to be successful as part of a medical device a polymer has to resist both biological rejection by the patient s body and degradation. The human body is an enviromnent which is simultaneously hostile and sensitive, so that materials for application in medicine must be carefully selected. The essential requirement is that these materials are biocompafible with the particular part of the body in which they are placed. The extent to which polymers fulfil this requirement of biocompafibility depends partly on the properties of the polymer and partly on the location in which they are expected to perform. For example the requirements for blood biocompafibility are stringent since blood coagulation may be triggered by a variety of materials. By contrast, the requirements for materials to be used in replacement joints in orthopaedic surgery are less severe and materials as diverse as poly (methyl methacrylate) and stainless steel can be used with minimal adverse reaction from the body. [Pg.146]

Three types of coagulation were considered. The glucono(5)lactone (GDL)-induced coagulation system (GDL system) was prepared by acidification with 1.75 g/L GDL (Roquette, Lestrem, France). The rermet-induced coagulation system (rennet system) was prepared by the addition of calf rennet (SKW, Baupte, France) at 25.6/rg/L of milk. The GDL-I-rermet-induced coagulation system (mixed system) was prepared by acidification with 0.45 g/L GDL for 2h followed by the addition of rennet at 15.4/ig/L of milk. Generally, the major adverse effects associated with colloids are fluid overload, dilutional coagulopathy, and anaphy-lactoid/anaphylactic reactions.24,32 Although derived from pooled human plasma, there is no risk of disease transmission from commercially available albumin or PPF products since they are heated and sterilized by ultrafiltration prior to distribution.24 Because of direct effects on the coagulation system with the hydroxyethyl starch and dextran products, they should be used cautiously in hemorrhagic shock patients. This is another reason why crystalloids maybe preferred in hemorrhagic shock. Furthermore, hetastarch can result in an increase in amylase not associated with pancreatitis. Synthetic heterocyclic and modified amino acid derivatives have been grouped in a class of thrombin inhibitors called peptidomimetics. An example of such a compound is argatroban, with a molecular mass of 532 Da. It blocks thrombin s active catalytic site by binding to the adjacent apolar binding site. This selective reversible inhibitor of thrombin has a K of 19 nM and blocks thrombin s role in coagulation and fibrinolysis (62). [Pg.150]
