Clinical units

USP also issues vitamin D capsules for AO AC deterrnination in rats and an oil solution for the vitamin D AO AC deterrnination in chicks. Historically, the following units (shown with their approximate international unit equivalence) have been used but are currendy abandoned 1 clinical unit = 12-17 lU 1 biological unit = 0.125 lU 1 protection unit = 0.125 lU 1 Laquer unit = 0.14 lU 1 Poulson unit = 0.2 lU 1 Steenbach unit = 3 lU. The MRC, ICU, and Coward units all approximated the international unit and are also no longer in common use. [Pg.132]

For consistency, clearance here is expressed in cm /s although the more common clinical units, and those used later in this chapter, are ml,/min. Combination and rearrangement of equations 6—8 allows clearance to be estimated from mass-transfer coefficient and vice versa the conditions of countercurrent flow with no dialysate recycling are shown below. [Pg.36]

Ms. Benson, a nurse on your clinical unit, tells you that the head nurse is upset with her because she has not been recording the administration of narcotics immediately after they are given. Discuss the rationales you could give to Ms. Benson to stress the importance of recording the administration of narcotics immediately after they are given. [Pg.27]

The secretin test is based on the principle that secretion of pancreatic juice and bicarbonate output are related to the functional mass of pancreatic tissue. After an overnight fast, basal samples of fluid are collected from the stomach and duodenum. One clinical unit (CU) of secretin/kg body weight is administered intravenously, and duodenal fluid is collected at 15-minute intervals for at least 1 hour. Purified porcine secretin has traditionally been used for the test, but recent studies have confirmed that synthetic porcine secretin (0.2 (Ig/kg) gives results that are not significantly different from results with biologic secretin. ... [Pg.1869]

It has been stated that large numbers of mature women are volunteering for the new lipid, heart risk, osteoporosis and arthritis studies, due to their concern that women have been represented so poorly as subjects in the past. Phase I studies are of short duration (1-2 weeks), but usually require confinement of the volunteers to the clinical unit for that time. Because of this time commitment, far fewer mature women volunteer, due to career conflicts or because they are often burdened unequally with family management. Those that do volunteer are generally unattached young female students. Thus, most female volunteers may not be typical of a representative , mature, child-bearing population (if this can ever be defined). [Pg.171]

Cardiovascular or blood viscosity measures may differ between the control subjects and marijuana abusers and thereby confound the results of TCD studies. Resting heart rate and BP are recorded in all subjects at times when TCD measurements are made. Measurements are made within 72 h of admission and at 28-30 d after admission to the clinical unit for the substance abusers. These cardiovascular measures are also recorded on an outpatient visit for the control subjects as a comparison. Cholesterol, hemoglobin, and hematocrit are measured on an outpatient visit for control subjects and within 72 h of last use for substance abusers as indirect measures of blood viscosity. [Pg.262]

The prototype system used in the trial was made by General Electric Medical Systems (Milwaukee, WI). The system used a 18 x 23 cm detector incorporating an amorphous silicon thin-film transistor bonded to a cesium iodide crystal scintillator. Other than the detector and associated electronics, the system was identical to one of the GE s clinical units, the DMR. For this reason, the GE DMR was chosen as the film unit for the trial. The digital and film units had almost identical dimensions, allowing the same patient positioning to be used on both. The only noticeable difference was the thickness of the digital detector on the prototype, compared with the film cassette used on the DMR. [Pg.146]

When different test-species are compared, little connection can be found between dosage and activity, but activity is usually well correlated with blood level. Hence the first task of a clinical unit is cautiously to find what dose in healthy human beings will produce the blood level found effective in laboratory animals. From kinetic data, obtained from the analysis of blood and urine samples as described in Section 3.7, a safe and effective probable dose for patients can be calculated. [Pg.17]

Putting the preceding discussions into practice is the everyday mission of the pulmonary function laboratory, a common clinical unit designed to make respiratory measurements on hospital patients and research subjects. Some of the most common measurements and the devices used to make them will be described below. [Pg.552]

Children learn about activity coefficients at their mother s knee. What are we to reply when these children grow up to be medical students, interns and residents and they ask us what we mean when we babble about free and combined acid and clinical units What we ought to say is I beg your pardon for being foolish. Read Ed Moore s papers. Here are the reprints, but be sure to bring them back. I will need them again ... [Pg.12]

Drug overdose Seven cases of acute topiramate toxicity observed in two clinical units of poison centers have been described [333" ]. The doses of topiramate were 11-218 mg/kg. Somnolence was characteristic and vertigo, agitation, and mydriasis were less common. There was a metabolic acidosis in four cases. One patient who had not previously taken topiramate and who had taken 31 mg/kg had three secondarily generalized tonic-clonic seizures. All recovered without sequelae and were discharged after 4-8 days. [Pg.167]

In a report by Criner et al. (28) from another HCFA Chronic Ventilator Demonstration Project Clinical Unit of 77 patients, in which 74% had medical causes, the findings were similar to Gracey s. Ninety-three percent of patients were discharged, 82% were alive at 6 months, and 61% at 12 months. Eighty-six percent of the patients were completely weaned from mechanical ventilation, 11% required continuous ventilation, and 10% had nocturnal ventilation at the time of discharge. In those discharged, there was a signifrcant increase in functional status at 5 and 12 months. [Pg.176]
