United Kingdom Clinical Pharmacy

There is a fast lane for new drug approvals if the product is already in at least one of the following jurisdictions the United Kingdom, Canada, United States, Sweden, or Australia. Approxmately 85% (by value) of pharmaceuticals go through the nearly 3,000 community pharmacies. Yet, approxmately 80% of the population rely on the public sector for drugs, received through clinics, hospitals, primary care posts, or military facilities. Although there is a 20-year patent period of exclusivity/protection, the parallel imports option effectively defeats this protection. 

Jose Santos earned his doctorate in medicine from the Classic University of Lisbon in 1984. He has been a Clinical Research Associate at Lab. Servier and Associate Medical Director at Lab. Pfizer. Since 1992, Dr. Santos has been Medical Director at OM Portuguesa, S.A. He has also been serving ad Medical Rapporteur in the Commission of Revision of Pharmaceutical Products (CREF of the National Institute of Pharmacy and Medicines (INFARMED) since 1995. He is a member of the Portuguese Medical Association of the Pharmaceutical Industry and the Ordem dos Medicos and is a faculty member in pharmaceutical medicine at the Royal College of Physicians in the United Kingdom. 

Some research projects promoted or initiated by the Foundation are currently ongoing. A European research consortium, with the participation of different countries, is proposed to study the influence of pharmaceutical care in the control and treatment of minor diseases from community pharmacists, and it has submitted to the European Community in Brussels asking for economic support. Such research will be coordinated by the School of Pharmacy of the University of Manchester, United Kingdom. A project promoted by the European Society of Clinical Pharmacy is currently studying the number of drug related problems (DRP) identified by community pharmacists on patients discharged from the hospital. A research study on the number of DRP identified by pharmacists in patients admitted to emergency services of hospitals was initiated... 

The intended audience for the Encyclopedia is clinical pharmacists and pharmacy students throughout the world. The Encyclopedia should become an essential resource for libraries and drug information centers as well as for personal libraries. The Encyclopedia will also be of interest to other health care practitioners and students who wish to learn about clinical pharmacy practice.
