Atmospheric particles influence the Earth climate indirectly by affecting cloud properties and precipitation [1,2], The indirect effect of aerosols on climate is currently a major source of uncertainties in the assessment of climate changes. New particle formation is an important source of atmospheric aerosols [3]. While the contribution of secondary particles to total mass of the particulate matter is insignificant, they usually dominate the particle number concentration of atmospheric aerosols and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) [4]. Another important detail is that high concentrations of ultrafine particles associated with traffic observed on and near roadways [5-7] lead, according to a number of recent medical studies [8-11] to adverse health effects. [Pg.450]

Next to the temperature gradient inside the snowpack, an important driving force for snow metamorphism is wind, that lifts, transports and redeposits snow crystals, changing snowpack mass and density " and deposits aerosols inside the snowpack.Wind and temperature are climatic variables that determine metamorphism and snowpack physical properties such as albedo and heat conductivity. These properties affect the energy balance of the snow-atmosphere and of the soil-snow interfaces, which in turn affect climate. [Pg.28]

Atmospheric models for research and forecasting of weather, climate, and air quality are all based on numerical integration of the basic equations governing atmospheric behavior. These equations are the gas law, the equation of continuity (mass), the first law of thermodynamics (heat), the conservation equations for momentum (Navier-Stokes equations), and usually equations expressing the conservation of moisture and air pollutants. At one extreme, atmospheric models deal with the world s climate and climate change at the other extreme, they may account for the behavior of local flows at coasts, in mountain-valley areas, or even deal with individual clouds. The observed widespread warming of the atmosphere and ocean, together with ice mass loss, support the conclusion that it is extremely unlikel that global climate change of the past fifty years can be explained without external forcing, and very likely that it is not due to known natural causes alone . [Pg.53]
