Cleaning and Repair

Before reusing a mold, it should be physically cleaned to remove any grime or protective materials. Buildup on the surface should be cleaned off without damaging the surface of the mold. Location pins must be checked and repaired if needed. Any damage caused during demolding also must be repaired if in a critical area. The repairs must be such that they do not leave any marks on the surface of the part.

Before carrying out any inspections or maintenance procedures on belt drives, make sure they are not in operation. Equipment operators should electrically isolate the drive system and lock-out and tag the machine that is to undergo maintenance. Once this precaution has been taken, the belts and pulleys can be removed from the machine for inspection, cleaning, and repair. 

Water connections to a shell-and-tube condenser must always be arranged so that the end covers can easily be removed for inspection, cleaning, and repair of the tubes. Heavy end covers require the use of lifting tackle, and supports above the lifting points should be provided on installation to facilitate this work.

The working environment can be improved in many ways. Space constraints should be removed or reduced. Floors should be regularly cleaned and repaired when damaged. Adequate lighting is essential and working at more than one level should be minimized so that hazardous ladder work is avoided. Attention should be given to the need for suitable temperatures and ventilation in the working area. 

An employer is allowed to choose the cleaning and disinfecting program the best meets the requirements of the standard and the particular circumstances of the workplace. In other words, the employer can have respirators cleaned and repaired in a centralized type operation where respirators are passed out to employees OR the employer may require the respirator user to handle all cleaning and respirator maintenance functions. What ever method the employer chooses, respirator cleaning, disinfection, and repair activities must be performed by employees who are adequately trained in the proper respirator care procedures. 

If tank heaters are employed, mobile maintenance equipment should be located in the mo.st convenient area. Tank maintenance includes. such aaivicies as internal inspection, cleaning, and repairs to internals, roof suppoas, and level instruments. Setting entrances to stairway or ladder areas at grade is the mast convenient choice for operations personnel. It should be noted that. stairways are not recommended for tanks whose diameters are le.s.s than 15 ft 6 in (4.7 m).
