Flushing and Cleaning

Air filters and water strainers have been mentioned in Section 33.2. Major work on those components and associated systems will be the cleaning and refilling of the oil sump of a viscous air filter and the periodic draining, cleaning and flushing of water tanks. 

Typically, the level of glycol required in a HW heating system is only 15 to 25% v/v or so (less than the 35 15% usually employed in cold and chilled-water closed-loop systems). Where glycols are added, the system must be cleaned and flushed first. The system can be partly drained to accommodate the volume of 100% glycol required or alternatively filled with a prediluted mix. If a 20% v/v strength is required, 25% v/v should be specified to allow for inaccuracies in mixing.

Water samples were collected in large plastic bottles in the field direct from kitchen spigots. These bottles were acid cleaned and flushed thoroughly with distilled water before use. A 500 ml. sample of this water was placed in an evaporating dish and 15 ml. of concentrated nitric acid added. This was evaporated on a steam bath to approximately 25 ml., transferred to a 50 ml. acid washed volumetric flask, and brought up to volume with double distilled water. This portion was then analyzed for K, Zn, Pb, Mn, Cu, Fe, and Ni, using standards containing the elements of interest.

The objects worked on and the environment need proper controls as well. A common problem is repair of a container that had a fuel in it. The vapors can ignite and explode and result in severe injury or death. To prevent such events, containers need to be cleaned and flushed out to remove residual fuel. Another method is filling such containers with water or sand during welding. That fills the tank so there are no remaining vapors.

The optimal manifold shape based on the lubrication approximation to deliver uniform liquid sheets is tapered and the cross-sectional area of the manifold at the ends of the die is very small [1]. The ideal manifold is not only difficult to construct but may also create many practical production problems such as cleaning and flushing. Therefore, the manifold has to be enlarged and the deterioration of flow uniformity owing to the enlargement should be properly compensated. 

Cavity cells fit the sealed-cell definition, but are made according to a different principle. These cells consist of a single block of window material into which a rectangular cavity has been bored. They can be filled, cleaned, and flushed with a hypodermic needle and syringe. A conical hole in the block above the cavity will accept a plastic stopper The stopper prevents evaporation of the sample. If these cells are damaged or broken, they cannot be repaired.
