A feature of the radiolysis experiments which requires some additional clarification concerns the ethylene product. One might object to the omission of any contribution from radical reactions to the ethylene product since radical scavengers affect the yield of this unsaturate. Thus, oxygen sharply reduces the ethylene product while nitric oxide has a less pronounced effect. However, since both scavengers have identical effects on all the rest of the products in the system, we are inclined to interpret the reduction of ethylene in the presence of these additives to quenching of the excited state of the ethyl chloride molecule which eliminates HC1. It has been supposed for some time that oxygen efficiently quenches certain excited states hence, this suggestion does not seem unreasonable.

In the first section, the mechanisms involved in size exclusion chromatography are discussed this is an area where additional understanding and clarification still are needed. Data treatment with respect to statistical reliability of the data along with corrections for instrumental broadening is still a valid concern. Other aspects outlined above remain rather obscure, but starting points for their eventual clarification will be discussed. 

As documented in a review article (9), no experimental data was available to support hypothetical mechanisms for the biosynthesis of hydrolyzable tannins until recently. Enzymatic studies have now changed this unsatisfactory situation, at least as far as the formation of pentagalloylglucose is concerned. Future work will provide insight into those other challenges discussed in this contribution and that still require clarification. 

Interpretations of Structural Modulations The following paragraphs summarize the reported models concerning the origin of the modulations and report some of the recent experiments. The origin of the modulations, the role of anion stoichiometry and of the cation substitution affecting the modulations and Tc are not yet fully resolved and need further experimental clarification. 

The most obvious future data needs concern the missing, uncertain, and conflicting data identified above. Additional experimental investigations are needed in the case of Fe(III) and Zr(IV) carbonate complexation, and in the case of the Sn(IV)/Sn(II) and the Se(0)/Se(-II) redox couples. The molecular structure of metal silicate complexes needs clarification in order to remove ambiguities in the speciation scheme of these complexes. A rather challenging topic concerns the supposed transformation of crystalline tetra-valent actinide oxides, AnOz(cr), to solids with an amorphous surface layer as soon as the An4+ ion hydrolyses.
