Although HPLC has superseded TLC in many application areas, conventional TLC plays a useful role where cost, rapidity, and simplicity are the overiding factors. On the other hand, TLC still seems to be more convenient, simple, less expensive, and efficient enough to ensure even difficult separation of pairs of analytes though its performance may sometimes be substantially lower than that of the instrumental modes of chromatography. Reviews on direct TLC resolution of enantiomers of amino acids and their derivatives including various other classes of compounds have appeared [3,6-9].
