A laboratory demonstration of this operation is far better than any written description. The tubes may be bought from many dealers e.g., A. Gallenkamp r Co. Ltd., Technico House, Christopher Street, London, EC2P 2ER, and Victoria House, Widnes, Lancs also The Scientific Glass- Blowing Co., 41 Upper Brook Street, Manchester 13), but students should learn to make their own c.apillary tubes. [Pg.2]

I would like to credit especially the fundamental contributions of Ron Gillespie to strong acid (superacid) chemistry and also to recall his generous help while I was still working at the Dow Laboratories in Canada. 1 reestablished contact with him during this time. We first met in the winter of 1956 at University College in London, where he worked with Christopher Ingold. Subsequently, he moved to McMaster... [Pg.96]

In the 1920s Sir Christopher Ingold proposed a mechanism for dehydrohalogenation that IS still accepted as the best description of how these reactions occur Some of the mfor matron on which Ingold based his mechanism included these facts... [Pg.214]

The mechanisms by which nucleophilic substitution takes place have been the subject of much study Extensive research by Sir Christopher Ingold and Edward D Hughes and their associates at University College London during the 1930s emphasized kinetic and stereochemical measurements to probe the mechanisms of these reactions... [Pg.330]

The idea of red cell substitutes is not new. In Ovid s Metamorphosis the witch Medea restored Jason s aged father, Aeson, by slitting his throat to let out old blood, replacing it with a magic brew she had concocted (1). Sir Christopher Wren was one of the first to apply the new knowledge about circulation to blood substitutes. In 1656 he infused ale, wine, scammony, and opium into dogs and from these efforts conceived the ideal of transfusing blood from one animal to another. Lower actually carried out the first transfusion experiments (2). [Pg.160]
