PRELOG, VLADIMIR (1906-1998). A Swiss organic chemist who won the Nobel prize for Chemistry in 1975 along with John W. Cornforih for his research into the stereochemistry of organic molecules and reactions. Although educated in Yugoslavia, he spent many years in Zurich. 

The priority rules in Table 5 1 were developed by R S Cahn and Sir Christopher In gold (England) and Vladimir Prelog (Switzerland) in the context of a different aspect of organic stereochemistry they will appear again in Chapter 7...

CORNFORTH, JOHN (19I7-). An Australian-born chemist who won the Nobel prize lor chemistry in 1975 with Vladimir Prelog for work on the chemical synthesis of otganic compounds. Although deaf since childhood, he attained his doctorate from Oxford and held prestigious posts all over the world, as well as authoring many papers on organic and biochemical subjects. 

John Warcup Cornforth (1917-), Australian-English chemist, receives the Nobel Prize for his work on the stereochemistry of enzyme-catalyzed reaction. Vladimir Prelog (1906- ), Croatian-Swiss chemist, also receives the Nobel Prize in chemistry for his research into the stereochemistry of organic molecules and reactions. 

Much of Barton s work throughout his career illustrates the way in which physical organic chemistry has permeated the whole of organic chemistry.339 This is also true of the career of Vladimir Prelog (1906-1998),340 who received the 1975 Nobel Prize in Chemistry jointly with John Comforth (b. 1917) for their researches in stereochemistry. About 1950, Prelog independently put forward some of the notions that became part of conformational analysis. He too contributed a volume to the ACS series of autobiographies.341... 

In his Nobel Lecture, Vladimir Prelog defined geometrical chirality by conjoining the two definitions17 ...

Finally, in this past year, two of this century s giants of stereochemistry passed away. However, the scientific legacies of Vladimir Prelog and Sir Derek H. R. Barton are firmly embodied in the fundament of our knowledge of stereochemistry and their personal legacies irrevocably woven into the hearts and minds of those co-workers, colleagues, students and friends who were graced by their lives.
