Christian Unions

Johann Valentin Andrea, who organized the Christian Unions, is also considered the most likely author of the Rosiemeian manifesto Christian Rosencranz. He adopted armorial bearings of a St. Andrew s cross with four roses. [Pg.281]

The Christian Unions of Johann Valentin Andrea, who organized the mass Rosicrucian evacuation from Germany, urgently needed stability in Britain. There were a number of ready havens for them. These included nobles who had been forming circles for the practice of the Mysteries. Dr John Dee had refreshed this knowledge from the Architects in Italy and Navigators in Holland. [Pg.283]

Coming." At this time eschatological discourse was co-opted into the service of the esoteric sciences, most especially into alchemical theory in the twelfth century Latin translation of the Turba philosophorum (Arabic original ca. 900 AD). Christian interpolations were added to this text referring to the death and resurrection of the chemicals in apocalyptic terms." The process of distillation in Christian alchemy symbolised death and resurrection, as well as the union of Macrocosm and Microcosm. To the alchemists the death and resurrection of the stone in the manner of a human being was the clearest indication that alchemy was a divine, not a human science. [Pg.63]

The effort necessary for this review and the advances that have been made on poly[2]catenanes would never have been achieved without the help, skills and enthusiasm of Dr. Dirk Muscat, Dr. Werner Kohler, Professor Jean-Marc Kern, Dr. Christiane Dietrich-Buchecker, Dr. Jean-Luc Weidmann, and Dr. J.-P. Sauvage. It is a pleasure for the author to gratefully acknowledge them. Acknowledgments are also due to Professor Klaus Mullen, Professor Xavier Coqueret, Dr. Adelheid Godt, Dr. Satoru Shimada, and Professor Fraser Stoddart for fruitful discussions, and to the Max-Planck Society and European Union for financial support. The author wishes to record his kind appreciation to Ms. Susan Mullins for assistance with proofreading. [Pg.274]

Christlich Demokratische Union, Christian Democratic Union. They actually refused to be called conservative, and rightly so, since only a minority of their members has conservative views, the majority having quite liberal views. The CDU has no section in Bavaria, where the CSU plays its role, though the Bavarian CSU is more conservative than the Prussian CDU. [Pg.297]

If Western mushroom eaters found the revelation shocking, it was mainly because they d been raised in a christianized culture that preaches the view that God cannot, by definition, be part of nature, because nature is what God created everything in nature is God s creation and, as such, can t be its own creator. That makes sense from a limited, earthbound perspective less so when one s soul, untrammeled and free, is sent soaring by mushrooms to bask in the dazzling light of God s revealed presence. That s how Wasson described his own mushroom experience, adding that the mushroom holds the key to a mystical union with God, whereas only rare souls can attain similar ecstasy and divine communion by intensive contemplation of the Eucharist in mainstream Christian services (Wasson 1957). [Pg.78]

Alcohol prohibition was enacted several years later when in 1920, Congress passed the Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution. The legislation was a victory for the forces that viewed alcohol as evil and destructive, notably the Anti-Saloon League and the Women s Christian Temperance Union. And the amendment was not vague about its intent It prohibited the production, sale, transportation, and importing of alcohol in any part of the United States. The only exception was that alcoholic beverages kept in the home, such as naturally fermented hard cider, could be consumed but not offered for sale (Lender Martin, 1982). [Pg.49]

Legend holds that Joseph of Arimathea also gave the Red Cross device to Prince Caradoc in his capacity of Defender of the Faith in Britain. From this, the Red or Rose Cross then became the device of the Christian flag of the British Church. It now dominates a St Andrew s Cross on the Union Jack. [Pg.238]

The union of the roses had meaning in a more esoteric context. It represented both the image of the rose of Minerva and St George, and the unification of the lineage of ancient Calebite-Zaddoki bloodlines with those of the Christian Church. [Pg.271]
