The hyaluronan in the component of pseudoexfoliation material from human donor eyes has been analyzed histochemically. Hyaluronan was found to coat the fibrillar exfoliation material on the lens, zonules, iris epithelium, and ciliary body (85). The major component of the pseudoexfoliation material on the posterior surface of the iris was histochemically verified as chondroitin sulfate, while the minor component was hyaluronan (86). A polarization microscopic analysis demonstrated the presence of more sulfated glycosaminoglycans in exfoliation syndrome than in control subjects. [Pg.194]

Chondroitin sulfate (formerly chondroitin sulfuric acid ) was first isolated from the rib cartilage of human corpses. In the middle of the last century, the analysis proved to be difficult since the substance contained nitrogen, and amino sugars were then unknown. So the professor and his assistant made the usual division of labor. The professor gave the substance its name (originally chondroitic acid ). The assistant ate the product under rigid dietary conditions, and sugar was found in his urine, which established the chemical nature of the compound. For this, the assistant s name came first in the published report. [Pg.1100]

Relatively few zoopolysaccharides have been isolated in pure condition, and few have had a fairly complete structural analysis. Glycogen, chitin, hyaluronic acid, heparin, chondroitin sulfates, and the blood-group polysaccharides are the best known and defined. The early work in this field has been summarized by P. A. Levene (1), who is also responsible for much of the nomenclature. Among the early workers were 0. Schmiedeberg, F. Miil-ler, 0. Hammersten, C. Neuberg, P. A. Levene, and associates. [Pg.710]

A meta-analysis of chondroitin sulfate supplementation found 16 publications that fit criteria for inclusion. Criteria included types of joint involvement smdied, study designs, numbers of patients emolled, and pain index variables analyzed. It was concluded that chondroitin sulfate may be useful in osteoarthritis treatment however, results of the published smdies were clouded by concomitant use of analgesics or NSAIDs, thus making conclusions about benefits difficult. Some have suggested that it can be used as an anti-inilammatory without dangerous effects on the stomach, platelets, and kidneys. ... [Pg.192]
