Chlorobenzene 4-trifluoromethyl

In a plant for the continuous nitration of chlorobenzene, maloperation during startup caused the addition of substantial amounts of reactants into the reactor before effective agitation and mixing had been established. The normal reaction temperature of 60°C was rapidly exceeded by at least 60° and an explosion occurred. Subsequent investigation showed that at 80° C an explosive atmosphere was formed above the reaction mixture, and that the adiabatic vapour-phase nitration would attain a temperature of 700° C and ignite the explosive atmosphere in the reactor. In addition, homocoupling of o-trifluoromethyl chlorobenzene [27] and p-fluorobromobenzene [28] leading to 0,0 -bis(trifluoromethyl)bipheny] and p, p -dilluorobiphejiyl, respectively, and the preparation of various trifiuorom-ethylarenes [29, 30] have been performed using sacrificial anodes. 

This reaction has been carried out in DMAC for the trifluoromethylation of activated aryl chlorides such as 2,4-dinitro-l-chlorobenzene [95-97]. Similar trifluoromethylation can be accomplished with trifluoromethylcopper generated from trifluoromethanesulfonyl chloride and copper powder in DMAC [98] (Scheme 33). 

Subsequent papers in this series have reported the electrochemical fluorination of di- and tri-fluorobenzenes, (Part II) [17] trifluoromethyl-benzenes, (Part III) [18] chlorobenzene, (Part IV) [19] as well as side reactions during the fluorination of halobenzenes, (Part V) [20]. 

By heating with antimony(Ill) fluoride at 150°C, l,4-dichloro-2-(trichloromethyl)naphthalene is converted into l,4-dichloro-2-(trifluoromethyl)naphthalene in 75% yield.16 l-Chloro-2-(tri-fluoromethyl)naphthalene is obtained in 90% yield by refluxing the corresponding 2-trichlo-romethyl analog with antimony(III) fluoride in chlorobenzene for 9 hours.17...

Howdeshell and Hites [102] identified three aromatic fluorinated compounds associated with the production of 4-(trifluoromethyl)-chlorobenzene in sediment core samples from Lake Ontario in 1993. These compounds were specifically associated with the Hyde Park dumpsite near the Niagara River [97], which was also likely to be the main source of 2378-TeCDD (Fig. 9). The average maximum years for concentrations of these fluorinated compounds was 1969-1971 in the Niagara, Mississauga, and Rochester Basins, and 1975 in the Kingston Basin. Pearson et al. [19] noted that the peak PCDF concentration in Lake Ontario sediments corresponded to that of the fluorinated compounds, suggesting that Hyde Park may be the source of the unusual PCDF contamination of Lake Ontario as well as 2378-TeCDD.
