Chlorine bulk storage

The bulk storage of chlorinated solvents is practised widely throughout the world and providing the correct... [Pg.139]

From Chlorine Gas to Bleach Generated On-Site The Center for American Progress (CAP) study found a dozen facilities that now treat water by generating bleach disinfectant on-site. This practice eliminates bulk storage and transportation of hazardous chemicals. The process uses salt, water, and electricity to produce a dilute bleach solution. Survey respondents noted that this dilute solution is even safer than the stronger bleach that many utilities receive by truck or rail. [Pg.27]

The HSE has issued a number of guidance notes on the storage of specific substances such as chlorine, LPG, highly flammable liquid etc. Further guidance can be obtained from the distributive trade association or from the supplier of the substance who will offer practical advice on standards of storage of his products. Some suppliers provide a Duty of Care Service by visiting sites to assess the bulk storage conditions of the materials they supply. [Pg.837]

Consumers of chlorine in bulk quantities who receive shipment in single-unit tank cars often withdraw the chlorine direct to process, without transferring it to bulk storage facilities of their own. [Pg.321]

The bulk material may ignite or explode in storage. Traces of water may initiate the reaction. A rapid exothermic decomposition above 175°C releases oxygen and chlorine. Moderately explosive in its solid form when heated. Explosive reaction with acetic acid + potassium cyanide, amines, ammonium chloride, carbon or charcoal + heat, carbon tetrachloride + heat, N,N-dichloromethyl-amine + heat, ethanol, methanol, iron oxide, rust, 1-propanethiol, isobutanethiol, turpentine. Potentially explosive reaction with sodium hydrogen sulfate + starch + sodium carbonate. Reaction with acetylene or nitrogenous bases forms explosive products. [Pg.763]

When repeated tests indicate a faintly alkaline reaction, the chlorinated benzene is delivered to a settling tank and permitted to stand for several hours. The sludge that settles out at the conical base is rich in dichlorobenzenes. The bulk of the charge is withdrawn through a side outlet and pumped to a storage tank, which is heated to prevent crystallization of the charge. [Pg.287]

In most industrialized countries regulations exist governing the storage, in bulk or in drums, of highly flammable liquids. The storage of solvents which are not flammable (e.g. most chlorinated hydrocarbons) or which have a flash point above normal ambient temperature (e.g. DMF) are imHkely to be regulated imless they pose a very serious environmental hazard. [Pg.130]
