In a generalized sense, acids are electron pair acceptors. They include both protic (Bronsted) acids and Lewis acids such as AlCb and BF3 that have an electron-deficient central metal atom. Consequently, there is a priori no difference between Bronsted (protic) and Lewis acids. In extending the concept of superacidity to Lewis acid halides, those stronger than anhydrous aluminum chloride (the most commonly used Friedel-Crafts acid) are considered super Lewis acids. These superacidic Lewis acids include such higher-valence fluorides as antimony, arsenic, tantalum, niobium, and bismuth pentafluorides. Superacidity encompasses both very strong Bronsted and Lewis acids and their conjugate acid systems. [Pg.98]

Acyclic Se-N chlorides that are potential building blocks (as a source of the SeNSe unit) for cyclic Se-N systems are generated by the reactions of [SeChJiAsEg] or SeCU with (Mc3Si)3N as illustrated by the sequence of transformations that produce the five-membered [Se3N2Cl] cation (Scheme 2.4 and Section 8.4). [Pg.25]

Reaction of the Mannich product (112) from acetophenone itself with the Grignard reagent from p-chlorobcnzyl chloride gives the carbinol, 113. Dehydration in this case gives the antihistamine pyrrobutamine (114). It is not immediately clear why dehydration does not occur in the other sense so as to afford the energetically more favored stilbene. [Pg.78]

Selective removal of the less noble constituent has been demonstrated by chemical analysis in the case of nickel-rich alloys in fused caustic soda or fused fluorides ", and by etching effects and X-ray microanalysis for Fe-18Cr-8Ni steels in fused alkali chlorides. This type of excessive damage can occur with quite small total amounts of corrosion, and in this sense its effect on the mechanical properties of the alloy is comparable with the notorious effect of intercrystalline disintegration in the stainless steels. [Pg.440]

Now by taking one more step we can view acid-base reaction in a broader sense. Suppose we mix aqueous solutions of ammonium chloride, NH4CI, and sodium acetate, CH3COONa. A sniff indicates ammonia has been formed. Reaction occurs,... [Pg.193]

A sequence of straightforward functional group interconversions leads from 17 back to compound 20 via 18 and 19. In the synthetic direction, a base-induced intramolecular Michael addition reaction could create a new six-membered ring and two stereogenic centers. The transformation of intermediate 20 to 19 would likely be stereoselective substrate structural features inherent in 20 should control the stereochemical course of the intramolecular Michael addition reaction. Retrosynthetic disassembly of 20 by cleavage of the indicated bond provides precursors 21 and 22. In the forward sense, acylation of the nitrogen atom in 22 with the acid chloride 21 could afford amide 20. [Pg.103]

But there is a second notion, which Mendeleev sometimes called "real dements," in order to indicate their more fundamental status. In Bis sense, Ihe eh emants represent abstract substances that lack what wc normally regard as properties and that represent the form that elements take when they occur in compounds. For example, sodium and chlorine as simple substances—a grey mrt.il and a gicmish gas respectively—are nol literally present in the compound sodium chloride (table salt). Mendeleev would have said Brat sodium and chlorine are present In the compound as the abstract or "real ctemanls. ... [Pg.125]

The stannanes (-)-ent-12 and ( + )-ent- 3 (R = CH3) are obtained with >80% ee from the alkenyllithium (-)-sparteine complex105,107a (Section 1.3.3.3.1.1.). Hence, their titanium(IV) chloride mediated carbonyl additions are accompanied by chirality transfer and enantioface selection of opposite sense. This was demonstrated for the reaction with (5)-2-benzyloxy-propanal107b the d.r. (88 12) roughly reflects the enantiomeric composition of the stannanes. [Pg.425]

Optically active 2-allylpiperidines and -pyrrolidines arc obtained by treating hydroxylactams containing the l-[(S)-l-arylethyl]substituent as an auxiliary (see Appendix) with tin(IV) chloride and trimethyl(2-propenyl)silane46. Interestingly, the moderate diastereoselection when the aryl group is phenyl decreases when 2-chlorophenyl is used, whereas the sense of the stereoselectivity reverses for 2,6-dichlorophenyl or pentachlorophcnyl. These results are rationalized by application of molecular orbital theory and substrate conformational preferences46. [Pg.829]

Barbituric acid can be considered as a cyclized malonic acid diamide (malonyl-urea). It is therefore a cyclic diketone that may be classified, in the sense of the compounds discussed in Section 12.6, as a coupling component with a methylene group activated by two carbonyl groups in the a- and a -positions. The reaction with arenediazonium salts was studied by Nesynov and Besprozvannaya (1971). These authors obtained coupling products (in good yield) that they considered to be arylhydrazones. Coupling with 4-(phenylazo)benzenediazonium chloride was studied by Chandra and Thosh (1991). The lH NMR spectra of these compounds are consistent with the arylhydrazone structure 12.68. [Pg.332]

Anionic surfactants like alkanesulfonates can also be determined by poten-tiometric titration with ion-selective electrodes. Recently, a special PVC electrode was offered as a high-sense surfactant electrode in combination with the new titrant l,3-didecyl-2-methylimidazolium chloride [20]. This one-phase... [Pg.163]

However, the reactants are present as solutions, and once mixed do not in any real sense contain silver nitrate and sodium chloride as separate substances (even in the hypothetical instant before precipitation occurs). Example 4 might best be rewritten... [Pg.95]

Both solubilities are low, as we would expect for a salt with a small value of. S sp. Notice that PbCl2 is about 350 times less soluble in the NaCl solution. This makes sense in terms of the common-ion effect. The excess chloride ion suppresses the solubility of Pb by Le Chatelier s principle. The actual concentration of lead in seawater is much less than 4.0 X 10 M. This is because other lead salts are much less soluble than lead(II) chloride. The ocean contains carbonate, for example, and. STsp for lead(II) carbonate is quite small, 7.4 X lO ". ... [Pg.1317]
