HA> C, A> D and D > B, this is an assurance game where no dominant strategy exists for individual players (Chua 2003). In a N-persons game of assurance, however, there is a dominant strategy which is just the opposite of that in multipersons chicken games (Fig. 7.3, Table 7.6). 

Consider the game of "Chicken, a well-known ritual from American juvenile culture. Two boys drive their cars toward each other, and the first to swerve, or "chicken out/ has lost. Suppose the payoffs are as follows ... 

The bird lysozymes c, of which chicken egg white lysozyme (CL) is the most extensively studied example, provide an ideal system to recreate evolutionary intermediates and to study structure-function relationships of reconstructed ancestral proteins. Three major considerations qualify the avian lysozyme system for reconstruction of evolutionary pathways (1) the biochemistry of the enzymes has been extensively studied and well characterized,3,4 (2) there are many natural variants available from other birds, and homologous comparisons can be ensured since lysozymes for all game birds are encoded by a single gene,5 and (3) the three-dimensional structure of CL has been resolved at the atomic level, which allows for structural interpretation of the mutational impact.2,4 Proteins representing the ancestral, evolutionarily intermediate, and derived states of chicken and related bird lysozymes are made and characterized as described below.

Often the motivation for an action cannot be read off the action itself, but sometimes it can. Thus Matthew Rabin argues that in some cases of strategic interaction the motivation can be inferred from the action and induce an emotional response by another actor. Among his examples is the game of chicken, represented in Figure IV.2. 

The vegetarian community in Albuquerque cried fowl when 20 Carrots Cafe added chicken and turkey to their menu and lost their distinction for being the only vegetarian game in town. Despite this unfortunate turn of events, the little cafe across the street from the University of New Mexico still serves simple eats in an open air setting to students who come in for a quick, healthy meal. 

This is the game of chicken. Each player has an incentive to intimidate the other into passively accepting her own aggression, but to punish the aggression of your opponent is to suffer at least a transitory loss yourself. 

In this game we drop our earlier assumption of symmetry, so that flL = iiM and di = dm could arise only by coincidence. Since this is a variation of chicken, the following condition holds for worker payoffs... 

The prairie chicken (genus Tympanuchus, species T. cupido) is a member of the grouse family. It is an excellent game bird, esteemed for its delicate flesh. 

The pheasant, which originated in the Orient, is cleissed as both a game bird and an ornamental bird. Connoisseurs of this savory bird prefer hen pheasants alxjut 1 year of age. Pheasants are similar to chickens so, they may hie processed and cooked in a similar manner.

Similarly for wildlife species, differences in physiology have dramatic effects in toxic sensitivity. For example, although peregrine falcons are very sensitive to the eggshell thinning effects of DDT (chapter 2), other species of birds are not impacted. For example, this effect has not been observed in game birds (e.g., chickens, turkeys, quail, pheasants). In many instances, these differences are based on differences in the type, speed, and end products of metabolism across species.
