Assurance game

This is an assurance game. There is no reason for anyone to cheat, but players must still be reassured that cooperation will be mutual, so as to avoid the cost of unilateralism. (2) The Prisoner s Dilemma could be modified by reversing the consequence of unilateral cooperation... 

Workers will respond to risks not on the basis of their absolute disutility, as in an expected utility model, but in relation to more-or-less fixed standards. These standards therefore take on the function of social norms, patterns of judgment and behavior that, to an outside observer, may appear to refiect identical preferences on the part of each individual, but which, at least in this analysis, simply arise spontaneously in the process of rational collective action. In particular, these norms tend to be comparative rather than absolute, and they depend to some extent on perceptions of intent. The normative selection of risks to be regarded as actionable strengthens the bright line aspect of solutions to the assurance game, while the perception by workers that a risk is deliberately imposed on them by management increases the likelihood that it will be resisted.

HA> C, A> D and D > B, this is an assurance game where no dominant strategy exists for individual players (Chua 2003). In a N-persons game of assurance, however, there is a dominant strategy which is just the opposite of that in multipersons chicken games (Fig. 7.3, Table 7.6). 

The first definition gives no clue why one player is a star and another player is not. Its value is that it is practical, useful, and surely correct. It does not matter how awkward a basketball player is if he scores 30 points per game he is assured of a considerable amount of public acclaim. 

Don t be too eager, though, to scoff at this example. Instead, you may rest assured that some of the theories you will find in this book are waiting to be swept aside as we learn more about nature. The rub—no, the excitement—in the game is that we don t know which theories are fated to go. That remains for some of you to discover ... 

From 30 years experience, I can assure you that Europeans disagree too much among themselves to get a bloc vote and that I have never seen a trace of pressure from government. We can all be outvoted, there is nothing special about the USA, and the object of the game is to get consensus. This leaves us with the main factor which is commercial interests. 

Many details presented in this chapter are based on mathematics beyond the scope of this course, so some postulates must be accepted as rules of the game. When the rules are followed, the explanations that result match the actual properties of the elements, which is assurance that the postulates are valid.

One must develop systematic approaches to safety-critical software validation while minimizing casualties, including animals used in clinical testing. Real world validation through deployment, like command and control systems in military war game systems, is often impossible. Yet, one must develop approaches to develop credible safety assurance.
