Chemists’ work restrictions

Chemical development provides key deliverables to other departments that means that the development chemist works under the restrictions of deadlines (the drug substance is always needed yesterday), trying to find ideal process qualities ( see summary), and performing targeted research that is unpredictable. The development scientists work with the best processes available at the time, not with an ideal process. 

I restrict my attention to non-relativistic pioneer quantum mechanics of 1925-6, and even further to the time independent formulation. Numerous other developments have taken place in quantum theory, such as Dirac s relativistic treatment of the hydrogen atom (Dirac [1928]) and various modern quantum field theories have been constructed (Redhead [1986]). Also, much work has been done in the philosophy of quantum theory such as the question of E.P.R. correlations (Bell [1966]). However, it seems fair to say that no fundamental change has occurred in quantum mechanics since the pioneer version was established. The version of quantum mechanics used on a day-to-day basis by most chemists and physicists remains as the 1925-6 version (Heisenberg [1925], Schrodinger [1926]). 

For well over 100 years, nearly all new work in organic chemistry (except for that disclosed in patents) has been published in journals. There are thousands of journals that publish chemical papers, in many countries and in many languages. Some print papers covering all fields of science some are restricted to chemistry some to organic chemistry and some are still more specialized. Fortunately for the sanity of organic chemists, the vast majority of important papers in pure organic chemistry (as opposed to applied ) are published in relatively few journals, perhaps 50 or fewer. Of course, this is still a large number, especially since some are published... 

One of the first goals of the CIS was to produce a series of searchable chemical data bases for use by working analytical chemists with no especial computer expertise. A second aim was to link these data bases together so that the user need not be restricted to a consideration of for example, only mass spectral data. 

According to Sternbach s account of the discovery of chlordiazepoxide, chance was also at work in the laboratories of Hoffmann-1 a Roche, although in a different way of the series of substances that Stembach had synthesized, why should it have been chlordiazepoxide, of all others, that had been left behind untested in the chemist s laboratory Rather than stressing this chance occurrence, the well-conducted clinical trial of the experimental preparation should be emphasized instead. This study was not restricted to a single indication or dosage range, but was extended in the face of initial unfavorable results into those indications within which the then standard preparation meprobamate achieved its best results (Cohen, 1970). 

Complexes of chromium(III) with ammonia and amines were among the first to be recognized by the early coordination chemists. Consequently, there is a vast literature, and this section is restricted to work since the comprehensive review by Garner and House302 in which... 

If the application is for a biological system, wherein the objective is to isolate or quantitate a specific drug and its metabolite which is known, then the chemist can proceed to work with the compounds directly. In most cases, however, the chemist must be prepared to resolve the unexpected compound, which is not all that difficult, depending on the equipment available. The possibility that a thermal environment, such as GC, can initiate a reaction involving a labile drug or metabolite can be distressing, to say the least. Sample preparation usually includes some isolation technique which restricts classes of compounds. The need for sample cleanup will depend on the nature of the sample (see Section 12.3). The point here is that there will be some sample preparation as the first step in the analysis which will provide an initial "cleanup" of the sample. 

The importance of artificial restriction enzymes has been well understood by many chemists, and several challenging attempts have been made already. Although many difficulties remain, elegant work by many people is paving the way. This chapter deals mainly with the recent work of our laboratory on site-selective DNA scission and its applications to biotechnology. 

The well known work of Kornblum (15) is restricted to the ambident action of ions formed by first row elements, i. e. those of most interest to organic chemists. 

Just as many new personalities have come to play significant roles in the psychedelic arena in the last few decades, so have a plethora of new psychochemicals. In spite of the legal restrictions placed on their work, chemists and pharmacologists both underground and above-ground continue to synthesize and test new psychedelic compounds at the rate of perhaps dozens a year.
