Chemists’ work restrictions

Chemical development provides key deliverables to other departments that means that the development chemist works under the restrictions of deadlines (the drug substance is always needed yesterday), trying to find ideal process qualities ( see summary), and performing targeted research that is unpredictable. The development scientists work with the best processes available at the time, not with an ideal process. [Pg.14]

I restrict my attention to non-relativistic pioneer quantum mechanics of 1925-6, and even further to the time independent formulation. Numerous other developments have taken place in quantum theory, such as Dirac s relativistic treatment of the hydrogen atom (Dirac [1928]) and various modern quantum field theories have been constructed (Redhead [1986]). Also, much work has been done in the philosophy of quantum theory such as the question of E.P.R. correlations (Bell [1966]). However, it seems fair to say that no fundamental change has occurred in quantum mechanics since the pioneer version was established. The version of quantum mechanics used on a day-to-day basis by most chemists and physicists remains as the 1925-6 version (Heisenberg [1925], Schrodinger [1926]). [Pg.18]

For well over 100 years, nearly all new work in organic chemistry (except for that disclosed in patents) has been published in journals. There are thousands of journals that publish chemical papers, in many countries and in many languages. Some print papers covering all fields of science some are restricted to chemistry some to organic chemistry and some are still more specialized. Fortunately for the sanity of organic chemists, the vast majority of important papers in pure organic chemistry (as opposed to applied ) are published in relatively few journals, perhaps 50 or fewer. If the application is for a biological system, wherein the objective is to isolate or quantitate a specific drug and its metabolite which is known, then the chemist can proceed to work with the compounds directly.
