Properties. The mechanical properties of E-SBR vulcanizates depend on the type and level of filler in the compound. Unfilled gum vulcanizates have very poor tensile strength and ultimate elongation, because the rubber lacks self reinforcing of the type found NR rubber vulcanizates, i.e., strain-induced crystallization. This inadequacy is offset by the addition of reinforcing fillers, i.e., carbon black or chemically coupled silica. At optimum loadings with reinforcing carbon black, mechanical properties similar to those of NR can be achieved. However, NR compounds exceed SBR compounds in tear strength because of NR s strain-induced crystallization. [Pg.264]

Free radical grafting of maleic anhydride (MA) onto polyolefins has gained wide industrial use. MA modified polyolefins are an essential part of many plastics formulations. They are used as chemical coupling agents, impact modifiers, and compatibilisers for blends and filler reinforced systems [65-67]. [Pg.371]

At elevated temperatures, the role of glass fiber reinforcement becomes a crucial factor for deciding what base material to use. Before the advent of more efficient chemically coupling combinations, there was a wide performance gap between SGFR composites based on polyamide and polypropylene resins. Obviously, that gap has shrunk significantly by improved interphase design for chemically coupled polypropylene materials. [Pg.237]
