In contrast to synthesis, combustion, and decomposition reactions, many chemical reactions involve the replacement of an element in a compound. There are two types of replacement reactions single-replacement reactions and double-replacement reactions. [Pg.287]

A single-replacement chemical reaction is one in which one substance from a compound is replaced by another substance. A generic equation for such a reaction is as follows. [Pg.73]

Classify reactions as single-replacement chemical reactions. [Pg.73]

Sigma (a) bonds Sigma bonds have the orbital overlap on a line drawn between the two nuclei, simple cubic unit cell The simple cubic unit cell has particles located at the corners of a simple cube, single displacement (replacement) reactions Single displacement reactions are reactions in which atoms of an element replace the atoms of another element in a compound, solid A solid is a state of matter that has both a definite shape and a definite volume, solubility product constant (/ p) The solubility product constant is the equilibrium constant associated with sparingly soluble salts and is the product of the ionic concentrations, each one raised to the power of the coefficient in the balanced chemical equation, solute The solute is the component of the solution that is there in smallest amount, solution A solution is defined as a homogeneous mixture composed of solvent and one or more solutes. [Pg.365]

Predicting Use the diagram to predict if a single-replacement reaction will occur between the following reactants. Write a chemical equation for each reaction that will occur. [Pg.40]

Applying Concepts Write a balanced chemical equation for the single-replacement reaction that occurred. [Pg.47]

In a single replacement reaction, one element replaces another element in a compound. An example of a single replacement is when sodium is added to water. The reaction of sodium and water is represented by the following chemical equation ... [Pg.56]

Simple Carbohydrate monosaccharides such as glucose, fructose, and galactose that cannot be broken down by water Single Replacement Reaction type of chemical reaction in which one element replaces another in a compound Smelting to melt an ore in order to refine a metal from the ore... [Pg.348]

Most catalytic reactions involve a number of species of atoms and molecules. To deduce the mechanism of the reaction and the forces between the various species and between the species and the surface is obviously a complex procedure, but the problem is simplified by a study of the adsorption phenomena of a single species of atom or molecule. Such studies have shown that when some molecules are adsorbed on some adsorbents, the molecular bond is broken and is replaced by two bonds with the adsorbent the admole is changed to two adatoms. A surface chemical reaction has taken place and the adatoms are said to be chemisorbed. If at sufficiently low temperatures this reaction does not take place, the adsorbed molecules are not broken up into two adatoms, and the admoles are said to be physisorbed. Above a certain temperature the rate of the reaction is sufficiently rapid to be appreciable at higher temperatures, the rate is very rapid. Such reactions have led to the concept of an activation energy, that is, the energy which must be given to an admole to convert it into adatoms. Even if an admole is not completely dissociated, it is to be expected that the strength of the molecular bond has been weakened as a result of the adsorption hence it is likely that the probability of reaction with other adsorbed species will be quite different from what it is between the two species in free space. [Pg.136]

Single displacement reaction A chemical reaction in which an element replaces one ion in a compound. It has the general formula A + By - Ay + B. [Pg.99]

Typical analysis of blood and urine is based upon chemical reactions, one per chemical species (or analyte ) of interest. Low-accuracy, single-analyte tests such as for blood glucose can be performed using at-home kits comprehensive blood tests at hospitals are performed using dedicated analyzers that suck in a sample and pump portions of it to various sensor modules. The purpose of this chapter is to explore the possibility of using Raman spectroscopy to replace conventional present tests in certain circumstances. [Pg.386]

As with any problem that includes the word react, the chance of needing a balanced chemical equation is pretty much a foregone conclusion. The single replacement reaction, written and balanced, is... [Pg.213]

Four ways in which chemical reactions may be classified are combination, decomposition, single replacement (substitution), and double replacement (metathesis). [Pg.73]

These reactions are part of a larger category of reactions known as redox reactions (redox is short for oxidation-reduction). Sometimes these are called displacement reactions. These are chemical reactions in which atoms of one element replace the atoms of a second element in a compound. A general equation for a single-replacement reaction involving a metal (A), replacing a metallic cation in solution (B) is ... [Pg.248]

If changes in the mole numbers nf occur as the result of a single chemical reaction in a closed system, then by Eq. (15.3) each dtit may be replaced by the product vide. Equation (10.2) then becomes... [Pg.265]

The single bonds between carbon and hydrogen atoms in organic compounds are not highly reactive. However, these compounds do participate in a variety of chemical reactions, one of which is called a substitution reaction. A substitution reaction is a reaction in which one or more atoms replace another atom or group of atoms in a molecule. Another type of reaction involving organic compounds is an addition reaction in which an atom or molecule is added to an unsaturated molecule and increases the saturation of the molecule. [Pg.714]

Chemists classify reactions in different ways. One way is to distinguish among five types of chemical reactions synthesis, combustion, decomposition, single-replacement, and double-replacement reactions. Some reactions fit equally well into more than one of these classes. [Pg.284]

Single-replacement reactions Now that you ve seen how atoms and molecules rearrange in synthesis and combustion reactions, look closely at the reaction between lithium and water that is shown in Figure 10-8. The expanded view of the reaction at the molecular level shows that a lithium atom replaces one of the hydrogen atoms in a water molecule. The following chemical equation describes this activity. [Pg.287]

In Chapter 10, you learned that a chemical reaction can usually be classified as one of five types—synthesis, decomposition, combustion, single-replacement, or double-replacement. In this chapter, you ll investigate a special characteristic of many of these reactions— the ability of elements to gain or lose electrons when they react with other elements. You experimented with this characteristic when you did the DISCOVERY LAB. [Pg.635]
