This paper is dedicated to Gaston Berthier, from whom I have learned a lot. Although Berthier s publications have mostly dealt with applications of quantum mechanical methods to chemical problems, he never liked black boxes or unjustified approximations even if they appeared to work. The question why the quantum chemical machinery does so well although it often lies on rather weak grounds has concerned him very much. I am therefore convinced that he will appreciate this excursion to applied mathematics. [Pg.88]

Supramolecular control of reactivity and catalysis is among the most important functions in supramolecular chemistry. Since catalysis arises from a differential binding between transition and reactant states, a supramolecular catalyst is, in essence, chemical machinery in which a fraction of the available binding energy arising from noncovalent interactions is utilized for specific stabilization of the transition state or, in other words, is transformed into catalysis. [Pg.113]

A different approach is taken with small samples of DNA. With a technique termed the polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, the DNA is not concentrated instead, DNA is multiplied. The polymerase chain reaction uses the body s own chemical machinery, harvested from cells and brought to a test tube, to make copies of DNA until the concentrations are high enough to analyze. [Pg.320]

It is believed that the site-occupation probability, p5, plays a role of concentration in real systems. If that is the case, the hyperbolic relation between Dc and ps predicted by Eq. (114) is in marked contrast to the corresponding Dc vs. C diagram of real systems, where Dc is known to converge to the ideal value, Dco, with C—o [48,81,86,98,99]. Clearly, the abnormality in the critical behavior of the percolation model is derived from the abnormality in the chemical machinery of the intermolecular reaction (Sect. 5) which is in proportion to the first order of C, more exactly to M0ps2, the same order as the cyclization rate, so that the concentration terms cancel out each other, resulting in the expression of Eq. (114) without the y term. [Pg.193]

Thanks to a great deal of effort by physicists, the determination of the threshold now amounts to an accuracy higher than 10 5. Although, because of the difference in chemical machinery, one cannot directly test the polymer gel theory by the percolation simulation, one can test the soundness of the underlying mathematical method by way of the examination of the corresponding threshold Eq. (114) derived in a like manner ... [Pg.203]
