Chemical engineers get paid to make whatever approximations are reasonable to find answers at the level of sophistication required for the problem at hand. If this were easy, our salaries would be lower. 

Chromatography is the primary analytical method in chemical analysis of organic molecules. This technique is used to analyze reaction products in most of the processes we have been describing. The analysis of reaction products and of the efficiency of separation units usually is done by analytical chemists (who earn lower salaries), but chemical engineers need to be aware of the methods of analysis used and their reliability.

An acceptable plant design must present a process that is capable of operating under conditions which will yield a profit. Since net profit equals total income minus all expenses, it is essential that the chemical engineer be aware of the many different types of costs involved in manufacturing processes. Capital must be allocated for direct plant expenses, such as those for raw materials, labor, and equipment. Besides direct expenses, many other indirect expenses are incurred, and these must be included if a complete analysis of the total cost is to be obtained. Some examples of these indirect expenses are administrative salaries, product-distribution costs, and costs for interplant communications. 

Research careers open to chemical engineers. Determine the level of education, the approximate salaries, and the areas of study needed to become a chemical engineer. 

Dr. Eggloff suggested that Dr. Seymour look in the want ads of the Chemical Engineering News. Continuing East, Dr. Seymour drove to Akron, Ohio where he interviewed with Dr. Loren Sebrell at Goodyear Tire Rubber Co. on Monday morning and was at work in the laboratory that afternoon. But because of the depression, his salary was only 210 per month.
