Chemical blending

IPN technique leads to the formation of two interpenetrating three-dimensional networks that are not covalently bonded. The cross-linking of at least one of the polymer systems distinguishes an IPN from a chemical blend.

Table III shows the result of SANS analysis on fully polymerized PB/PS IPN s, seml-IPN s, and chemical blends by Fernandez et al. [ n.] The specific interfacial surface area was shown to increase with Increasing crosslink density, S decreasing in the order full-IPN s, semi-I IPN s, seml-II IPN s afid chemical blends, as expected from many earlier studies. Its value ranges from 20 to 200 m /gm, in the range of true colloids. This result is particularly important because interfacial surface area is closely related to toughness and impact strength.

The proprietary chemical blends or cleaners effectively accelerate the biodegradation of most organic pollutants. 

This route can present a win-win position, as the guarantee of a foreign, quality manufactured, fit-for-purpose chemical blend, supported by a local service company (and often enhanced by a periodic technical service visit... 

In most marketplaces there are also toll-blender companies, who specialize in producing private-label water treatment chemical blends for small (and sometimes quite large), independent service companies. The toll-blender companies will either manufacture chemical products according to their customers confidential formulations or may offer a range of standard formulations should the service company customer not have the level of in-house formulatory expertise necessary. 

Thus, it is generally possible for end-user buyers to find a suitable water treatment service company that can offer, one way or another, quality chemical blends fit-for-purpose. 

NOTE Whether the small service company has the resources and expertise to utilize quality chemical blends that may have been obtained elsewhere to maximum performance and benefit is another question. The buyer can only be satisfied by asking some in-depth questions on this point and drawing appropriate conclusions.

This last creates a kind of chemical blend and was recently accomplished (9) to produce a novel morphology. 

To examine the effect of phase separation on the loss modulus, a sample of a 50/50 chemical blend was phase separated by annealing at 130 C and then evaluated by DMS, Figure 8. Note that the unannealed 50/50 blend shows a broad transition similar to that obtained by DSC and by Hourston and Hughes (24). As compared to the unannealed blend, the annealed PVME/PS blend shows a broader transition. Similarly, the IPN has a still broader transition than the blend. However, the LA s for the three samples are relatively constant, 5%, agreeing also with theory. Table II. Note that overall experimental error is 10%. Also, it was observed that the phase separated blend has a milky white appearance whereas the IPN is slightly hazy. This indicates that the size of the phase separated domains in the IPN are smaller.

A chemically blended thermoplastic IPN was developed by Petrarch Systems (38). It consists of polyurethane, polyamide (40), or...

Hose as the base polymer used in the inner tube of a wide range of hoses designed for contact with oils, ftiels, solvents, and various chemicals. Blends of nitrile and PVC are used for the hose covers on such hoses and with fire hoses. 

The sibling Archips species argyrospilus and mortuanus exhibit nearly identical times of attraction to caged virgin females (Fig. 13.2) specificity in attraction is mediated largely by the ratio of the (Z) and ( ) isomers of 11-tetradecenyl acetate. The same pattern of chemical blend specificity holds for the other species (Table 13.1) and evidently it is enhanced by the antagonistic effects upon attraction by the pheromone components emitted by the other species. For example, Pandemis limitata utilizes the same proportion of (Z)-l 1-and (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetates as A. mortuanus, but males of P. limitata are not lured to this blend when the two additional blend components for A. mortuanus, ( )-11-tetradecenyl and dodecyl acetates, are added.

Simultaneous chemical blends were prepared for 75%-25% and 50%-50% PU-PMMA compositions in the same manner as the SIN preparation except that the 1,4-BD-TMP mixture was replaced by pure 1,4-BD in the PU network and the TMPTMA was omitted in the PMMA network. 

Kim et refer to pseudo-IPNs and linear blends in their notation. The term chemical blends refers to the polymerization of one (or both) monomer(s) in the presence of the other, to distinguish from the term mechanical blends, obtained by mixing previously formed polymers, and is actually a class of graft copolymer.
