Like the volume indexes, the collective indexes are composed of various individual indexes. However, on account of scientific developments, the content and organization of the indexes have been considerably changed in the course of the 85-year history of the Chemical Abstracts Service (Table 4). [Pg.49]

The connection between the user and the remote resource was said to be statefull , in that a complete history of any one session was assumed available, and successive transactions between the user and the remote computer could have access to this history. A good example of this model is the Chemical Abstracts on-line service introduced in the early 1980s, where the user could locally perform a series of defined searches on a central computer system located in Columbus, Ohio. Each query was saved as a named set (LI, L2, etc.), and in subsequent operations, these sets could serve as the starting point for further elaboration of the searches. [Pg.1427]
