The 8(b) inventory accumulation was the next major activity. For a decentralized company like Monsanto or, for that matter, most major chemical companies, the experience of centralized information gathering was a new experience. However, we believe that the experience not only was novel, but proved to be beneficial from several points of view. First of all, it enabled us to evolve a network of expertise. Second it gave us a central data-base on which to build other information important from a corporate point of view, and permit a one-time expense for developing a system. Third, it revealed that we needed to improve our data files in some areas. And, fourth, it gave our central staff departments some surprises as to substance locations. We used the Chemical Abstract Service Registry Profile capabilities to gather all the known synonyms and added our internal numeric and common identifiers to access the file via dozens of possible names or numbers. [Pg.116]

All test and reference items should be identified with a Chemical Abstracts Service registry number or other unique code. Where test items are novel compounds supplied by the sponsor of the study, there should be an agreed-upon identification system to allow the item to be tracked through the study. The composition and concentrations of prepared solutions should be known and recorded. A sample for analytical purposes of each batch of test item should be retained for all except short-term studies. This requirement has the potential to overload storage facilities very quickly, and some sensible arrangement must be made to archive samples of importance, while not giving an inspector cause to worry about inappropriate disposal of items. [Pg.282]

Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number (CASi) is a numeric designation assigned by the American Chemical Society s Chemical Abstracts Service and uniquely identifies a specific chemical compound. This entry allows one to conclusively identify a material regardless of the name or naming system used. [Pg.1967]

Registry Number, which is unique to each compound, is used to link the structure with names, references, and other information within the Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number System. However, there is no way to generate a Registry Number from a given structure, and data on specific compounds can only be recovered by finding the Registry Number first. Storage of Polymer Structures. CAS has developed comprehensive sets of nomenclature rules and structure conventions that have become standards in the world of chemical literature (see Chemical Abstracts Service Information System). CAS selects polymers for indexing according to a set of rules (5).
