Channel monitoring

A second source of cross talk occurs for mixtures of precursor-product ions with similar masses. Figure 6b shows the interference occurring when product and precursor ions within 1 Da of each other are monitored simultaneously for an analyte with the structure shown in Fig. 6a. The actual analyte signal should be observed only for a channel monitoring the 416.9-to-244.9 transition. Similar, although less intense, peaks are observed, however, for a precursor mass of 415.9 and/or a product ion mass of 243.9. This cross talk is caused by insufficient mass selectivity in the first quadrupole that allows the M — 1 to be transmitted.

The use of coincidence and fixed limit trips cem minimize these practices. It is necessary to monitor certain parameters of the process equipment to control damage or deterioration of parts or materials vhlch affect the life of a reactor. Ihstruments used for this application are classed as "Operating Instruments" and need lie only single channel monitors. 

At present the Barton-Mstrlsite transducer unit and the electronic monitoring system (Avien) used in the BSD Beactor could be ap[ ied to the older reactors successfully. However the cost is in excess of 1000 per channel monitored.

Samples with wild type sequence only had a signal in the channels monitoring masses representative of both wild type sense (ATA-s) and wild type antisense (ATA-as) alleles. A sample for an individual who is heterozygous at this locus has signals in the sense and antisense channels for both the wild type (ATA) and mutant (AAA) alleles. In a blind analysis of 16 individuals by SOMA and sequencing there was 1(X)% concordance. 

Methods for individual channel monitoring do not yet seem to be cost-effective. However, new methods for large-scale self-assembly of electronic components seem to offer an approach that may make individual channel monitoring possible at an affordable cost. The assumption is that early detection of device performance changes should allow more precise control of product quality.

Additionally, a standard coincidence circuit with a 19 ns coincidence window monitors the rate of coincidences around null delay, while a delayed-coincidence channel monitors the accidental rate. It is then possible to check that the true coincidence rate obtained by substraction is equal to the signal in the peak of the time-delay spectrum.
