In my essays it was stated that the people of Europe would approach each other economically more closely after the war. In the patent field, I said, internal conditions in Europe bordered on the ridiculous. There were no fewer than thirty different patent systems in Europe I said. The Vatican had its own patent laws. Several hydrocarbons occur in milk in trace amounts. Of these, carotenoids are the most significant. In quantitative terms, carotenes occur at only trace levels in milk (typically 200/rgl-1) but they contribute 10-50% of the vitamin A activity in milk (Table 3.5) and are responsible for the yellow colour of milk fat. The carotenoid content of milk varies with breed (milk from Channel Island breeds contains 2-3 times as much -carotene as milk from other breeds) and very markedly with season (Figure 3.4). The latter reflects differences in the carotenoid content of the diet (since they are totally derived from the diet) fresh pasture, especially if it is rich in clover and alfalfa, is much richer in carotenoids than hay or silage (due to oxidation on conservation) or cereal-based concentrates. The higher the carotenoid content of the diet, the more yellow will be the colour of milk and milk fat, e.g. butter from cows on pasture is yellower than that...

Milk contains, on average, 0.03 mg thiamin per 100 g. Most (50-70%) of the thiamin in bovine milk is in the free form lesser amounts are phos-phorylated (18-45%) or protein-bound (7-17%). The concentration in mature human milk is somewhat lower (c. 0.02 mg per 100 g). Human colostrum contains only trace amounts of thiamin which increase during lactation. Pasteurized milk from goats and Channel Island breeds of cow contain about 0.04 mg per lOOg, while values for raw sheep s milk are somewhat higher, with an average of 0.08 mg per 100 g. Most of the thiamin... 

In contrast, sites located on the northern Channel islands produced as much as 150,000 pieces of bead manufacturing refuse and hundreds of production blanks from a single cubic meter of excavation (18, 20, 36, 37). As well, a tradition of specialized bead making tools, including micro-blade drills and anvils, is documented on the northern Channel Islands (16). Nothing comparable to this level and regularity of production is evident at archaeological sites in central and northern California.

Nora Renouf58 was born in Jersey in the Channel Islands, though the date is unrecorded. She gained some experience there working in a chemist s shop and decided to follow a career in pharmacy. She moved to London and studied at the Pharmaceutical Society School of Pharmacy, passing the Minor in 1902 and the Major in 1903. Renouf followed Hooper as a recipient of the Redwood Research Scholarship in 1904. 

To contribute to the war effort, in 1916, Renouf returned to the Channel Islands to work in a hospital. Following the end of the War, Renouf returned to London and, in 1920, was one of the first cohort of women to be admitted to the Chemical Society (see Chap. 2). In her application to the Society, she noted that she was a survey officer at the Fuel Research Board of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.71 Renouf died in 1934.
