Channel flow porous

In filters etc. the particles become largely static in a bed or cake and in such cases the fluid therefore passes through a fixed array of particles or a porous solid and experiences drag as it does so (Figure 2.9). The particles resist the flow, reduce the velocity and give rise to an enhanced pressure drop compared with that in open channel flow. [Pg.37]

The species diffusivity, varies in different subregions of a PEFC depending on the specific physical phase of component k. In flow channels and porous electrodes, species k exists in the gaseous phase and thus the diffusion coefficient corresponds with that in gas, whereas species k is dissolved in the membrane phase within the catalyst layers and the membrane and thus assumes the value corresponding to dissolved species, usually a few orders of magnitude lower than that in gas. The diffusive transport in gas can be described by molecular diffusion and Knudsen diffusion. The latter mechanism occurs when the pore size becomes comparable to the mean free path of gas, so that molecule-to-wall collision takes place instead of molecule-to-molecule collision in ordinary diffusion. The Knudsen diffusion coefficient can be computed according to the kinetic theory of gases as follows... [Pg.493]

Anti-atrazine antibodies were coupled to a Si microchip comprising 42 coated porous flow channels. The porous Si layer was achieved by anodizing the channel in 40% HF/96% ethanol (1 1). Detection of atrazine was achieved in a competitive format. The chemiluminescence signal decreased when a known amount of horseradish peroxidase-labeled atrazine was added. This decrease was used to determine the amount of unlabeled atrazine in the sample [1030],... [Pg.349]

In the fourth subtechnique, flow FFF (F/FFF), an external field, as such, is not used. Its place is taken by a slow transverse flow of the carrier liquid. In the usual case carrier permeates into the channel through the top wall (a layer of porous frit), moves slowly across the thin channel space, and seeps out of a membrane-frit bilayer constituting the bottom (accumulation) wall. This slow transverse flow is superimposed on the much faster down-channel flow. We emphasized in Section 7.4 that flow provides a transport mechanism much like that of an external field hence the substitution of transverse flow for a transverse (perpendicular) field is feasible. However this transverse flow—crossflow as we call it—is not by itself selective (see Section 7.4) different particle types are all transported toward the accumulation wall at the same rate. Nonetheless the thickness of the steady-state layer of particles formed at the accumulation wall is variable, determined by a combination of the crossflow transport which forms the layer and by diffusion which breaks it down. Since diffusion coefficients vary from species to species, exponential distributions of different thicknesses are formed, leading to normal FFF separation. [Pg.205]

Frit-inlet asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (FIA-FIFFF) [1-3] utilizes the frit-inlet injection technique, with an asymmetrical flow FFF channel which has one porous wall at the bottom and an upper wall that is replaced by a glass plate. In an asymmetrical flow FFF channel, channel flow is divided into two parts axial flow for driving sample components toward a detector, and the cross-flow, which penetrates through the bottom of the channel wall [4,5], Thus, the field (driving force of separation) is created by the movement of cross-flow, which is constantly lost through the porous wall of the channel bottom. FlA-FlFFF has been developed to utilize the stopless sample injection technique with the conventional asymmetrical channel by implementing an inlet frit nearby the channel inlet end and to reduce possible flow imperfections caused by the porous walls. [Pg.720]
