Management change process

The change management process ensures that modifications are thoroughly reviewed to prevent new risks being introduced or the management processes, programs or elements being compromised in any way. 

The change management process should also ensure that a root cause analysis has been conducted to make sure the real problem has been identified and corrected. For example, if a pump seal fails it could simply be replaced with an identical seal. However, it may have failed because it was left in service beyond its natural life and the real failure was in the preventative maintenance program that should have replaced it earlier. 

Changes to computer systems must be reviewed in order to verify its compliance with the change management process, to ensure that the appropriate procedures have been followed, and that the validated status of the system has been maintained. The results of the audit are recorded and saved as part of the change control file for the computer system. 

A linkage should be provided between training programs and the change management process so that training requirements can be continually evaluated, adjusted, and maintained in alignment with the current state of the operational computerized system. 

Change management is typically a cross-functional activity involving the vendor, QA, and development and engineering personnel. The developer s (or your own) QA unit should approve and occasionally audit conformance to the change management process. 

Multiple change management processes may exist within a company— documentation, equipment, CRS, andproject-or system-specific processes.

BEG(UK)L operates two AGR stations (Hunterston B and Tomess) in Scotland. The company s Route 21 downsizing plans had been based on a predicted reduction in workload. Here, the Nil found that the company s workload had decreased, although not as much as predicted. The approved change management process at BEG(UK)L also required staff members to be retained in their posts imtil the workload had actually decreased, and the Nil foimd that this requirement had been honored. 

The Project Management Institute reinforces the message. Its PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) describes the progressive elaboration property of projects (see Section 8.3). Change management processes built into the project make mid-course corrections.
