The enthusiasm for developing DMFCs (the fuel cell researcher s dream) evolved in the 1960s, which was really the boom period for R D activities on all types of fuel cell technologies, mainly because of NASA s vital need for fuel cell power plants for space vehicles. Ambient temperature catalysis of O2 reduction at low overpotentials is a challenge in development of conventional proton exchange membrane fuel cells (pol5mer electrolyte membrane fuel cells, PEMFCs) [Ralph and Hogarth, 2002]. In this chapter, we discuss two classes of enz5mes that catalyze the complete reduction of O2 to H2O multi-copper oxidases and heme iron-containing quinol oxidases. 

In addition to the challenges cited above, there are some special issues associated with steroid chemistry that should be noted. The steroidal impurities formed in the process are generally similar in structure to the desired product and, in some cases, co-crystallization with the product is a problem. It is, therefore, critical to limit the formation of steroidal impurities in the reactions. The structural similarity between product and impurities also creates challenges in developing assays for reaction monitoring and purity determination. Furthermore, the poor solubility of these compounds in the solvents typically used in a manufacturing process makes it very difficult to achieve practical volume productivity in process development. 

The final chapter addresses the cross-cutting issue of materials processing for SOFC applications. The challenges in developing materials that satisfy the stringent materials property requirements is further complicated by the need to fabricate the materials in the desired shapes and with the desired microstructures. The production of a cost-effective SOFC requires compromises between materials properties and processing methods to produce materials with adequate properties at an acceptable cost. 

Section 5.2.2 include composites and metals. From a cost reduction point of view, it is estimated, according to the cost model, that the cost percentage of the plate in a stack can be reduced from -60 to 15-29% if the graphite plate were replaced by the composite plate or metal plate [15]. However, many uncertain factors are involved in the estimation. The progress and major challenges in development of bipolar plates fabricated by these candidate materials will be introduced in the following parf of this section.
