Chain Coated

It should be noted that in forming this dimeric channel structure all the hydrogen bonds are parallel to the channel axis and that the inner surface is lined with the polar polypeptide groups. In addition the various lipophilic side chains coat the outer wall of the structure and are thus in contact with the lipid hydrocarbon chains. The resulting gramicidin A channel is a most efficient means of ion transport with approximately 107 sodium ions traversing the channel per second, under conditions of 1 M NaCl, 100 mV applied potential and a temperature of 25 °C 225). The detailed mechanism by which this can be achieved is under active study 226). [Pg.187]

When protein molecules are treated with SDS, the detergent disrupts the secondary, tertiary, and quaternary structure to produce linear polypeptide chains coated with negatively charged SDS molecules. The presence of mercaptoethanol assists in protein denaturation by reducing all disulfide... [Pg.119]

STM and STS measurements have been also performed on B-doped and undoped SiNWS [45] produced by OAG [23, 80]. The as-grown sample consisted primarily of SiNWs and nanoparticle chains coated with an oxide sheath. Samples for STM and STS measurements were prepared by dispersing the SiNWs into a suspension, which was then spin-coated onto highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) substrates. The presence of nanoparticle chains and nanowires in the B-doped SiNWs sample was observed. Clear and regular nanoscale domains were observed on the SiNW surface, which were attributed to B-induced surface recon-... [Pg.353]

These parameters must be quoted for a particular solvent, as the solvent as well as the intrinsic nature of the polymer will determine what interactions occur. Selected data on conducting polymer phases obtained using this series are shown in Table 1.6, where they are compared with a conventional hydrophobic material, carbon (C18 alkyl chains)-coated silica. The retention index obtained using toluene indicates that the conducting polymers are capable of nonpolar interactions. The high reten-... [Pg.39]

In addition to the polystyrene-based materials, several attempts have been made to utilize silica gel as a porous column-packing material (37,38,65). Cg chain-coated silica gel was used for the SEC analysis of cellulose trinitrate with a DP of approximately 250-2500 (65). The separating power of the system was determined by a comparison of the molecular weight distribution obtained by SEC and fractional precipitation on the same sample. It was determined that in the SEC analysis, the cellulose trinitrate sample was in fact being separated by a size exclusion mechanism. [Pg.338]

The manner by which the chains are attached to the surface influences their intermolecular interactions was examined. The systems investigated included short end-attached chains of neutral water-soluble poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and of adsorbing neutral or charged polymers. It was then studied how the interactions are modified when short end-attached charged chains coat one or two surfaces or when long zwitterionic bmshes are growing from the substrates. ... [Pg.617]

GaAs has been coated with thiols with a view to modifying devices [123]. For these films, S-As bonds are presumed to be present. An ordering of the chains for = 18 has been reported. However, this system has generally been much less investigated than those involving metal substrates. [Pg.2625]

The hydrogenolyaia of cyclopropane rings (C—C bond cleavage) has been described on p, 105. In syntheses of complex molecules reductive cleavage of alcohols, epoxides, and enol ethers of 5-keto esters are the most important examples, and some selectivity rules will be given. Primary alcohols are converted into tosylates much faster than secondary alcohols. The tosylate group is substituted by hydrogen upon treatment with LiAlH (W. Zorbach, 1961). Epoxides are also easily opened by LiAlH. The hydride ion attacks the less hindered carbon atom of the epoxide (H.B. Henhest, 1956). The reduction of sterically hindered enol ethers of 9-keto esters with lithium in ammonia leads to the a,/S-unsaturated ester and subsequently to the saturated ester in reasonable yields (R.M. Coates, 1970). Tributyltin hydride reduces halides to hydrocarbons stereoselectively in a free-radical chain reaction (L.W. Menapace, 1964) and reacts only slowly with C 0 and C—C double bonds (W.T. Brady, 1970 H.G. Kuivila, 1968). [Pg.114]

Uses. 3-Pentenenitrile, 3PN, is used entirely by the manufacturers to make adiponitrile. i7j -2-Pentenenitrile, 2PN, can be cycli2ed catalyticaHy at high temperature to produce pyndine, a solvent and agncultural chemical intermediate. 2PN is also chlorinated to manufacture pentachloropyndine, an intermediate in the insecticide Dursban produced by Dow. Addition of ammonia to 2PN foUowed by reduction leads to 1,3-pentadiamine (Dytek ep), which is used as a curing agent for epoxy coatings and as a chain modifier in polyurethanes. [Pg.226]

Insoluble Ammonium Polyphosphate. When ammonium phosphates are heated ia the presence of urea (qv), or by themselves under ammonia pressure, relatively water-iasoluble ammonium polyphosphate [68333-79-9] is produced (49). There are several crystal forms and the commercial products, avaUable from Monsanto, Albright WUson, or Hoechst-Celanese, differ ia molecular weight, particle size, solubUity, and surface coating. Insoluble ammonium polyphosphate consists of long chains of repeating 0P(0)(0NH units. [Pg.476]

Uses. Vinyhdene fluoride is used for the manufacture of PVDF and for copolymerization with many fluorinated monomers. One commercially significant use is the manufacture of high performance fluoroelastomers that include copolymers of VDF with hexafluoropropylene (HFP) (62) or chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE) (63) and terpolymers with HEP and tetrafluoroethylene (TEE) (64) (see Elastomers, synthetic-fluorocarbon elastomers). There is intense commercial interest in thermoplastic copolymers of VDE with HEP (65,66), CTEE (67), or TEE (68). Less common are copolymers with trifluoroethene (69), 3,3,3-trifluoro-2-trifluoromethylpropene (70), or hexafluoroacetone (71). Thermoplastic terpolymers of VDE, HEP, and TEE are also of interest as coatings and film. A thermoplastic elastomer that has an elastomeric VDE copolymer chain as backbone and a grafted PVDE side chain has been developed (72). [Pg.386]
