Centralite

It is prepd by the action of methylamine on 4-chloro-l-nitrobenzene (Ref 5) by the action of methyl iodide (Ref 6), or methyl sulfate on 4-nit roaniline (Ref 7) or by the hydrolysis of 4-nitro-N-methylformanilide with hot coned aq HC1 (Ref 8). In a study of the effect of nitric acid concn on the prods of the nitration of N,N-dimethylaniline to form Tetryl, it was isolated in low yield by the action of nitric acid, d 1.046g/cc, plus Na nitrite on N,N-dimethylaniline (Ref 10). A eutectic mixt with N-ethyl-4-nitroaniline has been patented as a stabilizer for NC (Ref 12). Studies at NPF indicate that 4-nitro-N-methyl-aniline is superior to Centralite, 2-nitrodiphenyl-amine, or Acardite in stabilizing. NC Refs 1) Beil 12, 586, (295) 1125 ...

A typical formulation contains NC (12,00% N) 87.30, K sulfate 3.30, basic Pb carbonate 1.19, butyl stearate 4.16, ethyl centralite 1.03 total volatiles 3.02% (Refs 1 2)... 

The same name was also given to a singlebase propint, designed for small arms, developed by I.C.I. Ltd (Ref 2). The required ballistics for different types of ammo are obtained by surface treating the proplnt grains with methyl centralite, and in some cases, dibutylphthalate. 

Igniters. A mixt of 3kg of NC, 3.5kg of NG, and 400g of Centralite is homogenized with lOOg of dioctyl phthalate, 200g of dye, and 2.98kg of AP (particle size below 60y), and the mixt pressed into strands 1.5 mm in diam which can be used as an ign cord for rocket motors (Ref... 

The thin-layer technique (CA 60, 6691) utilizes aliquots of proplnt ether extract (I) and the ether soln (II) of a known mixt. II consists of nitrates of glycerol and glycol, di-Bu or di-Et phthalates, Et or Me centralites, DNT, and diphenylamine. The chromatoplates are made of 85 15 silica gel and plaster of Paris. These plates, containing spots of I and 11, are developed with 1 1 C6H6-petroleum ether, then sprayed with specific detectors by color. The method is much quicker and easier than chemical analysis and simpler than infrared spectroscopy and column chromatography... 

Many methods have been proposed and are used to study the thermal stability of propellants and to ensure the absence of possible autocatalysed decompositions during storage. None are sufficiently reliable to merit individual description. In practice, stabilisers are added, the usual being diphenylamine for nitrocellulose powders and symmetrical diethyl diphenyl urea (carbamate or centralite) for double base propellants. Provided a reasonable proportion of stabiliser remains, the propellant can be assumed to be free from the possibility of autocatalytic decomposition. The best test of stability is therefore a chemical determination of the stabiliser present. 

Centralit I dient als - Stabilisator fur Schielipulver, besonders fur Ni-troglyzerin-Pulver. 

Der Name Centralit leitet sich ab von der Zentralstelle fur wissen-schaftlich-technische Untersuchungen in Neubabelsberg , die diesen Stoff erstmalig fur Pulverzwecke einsetzte. Auch die Schreibform Zentralite wurde bekannt. 

Centralit I hat neben stabilisierenden auch gelatinierende Eigenschaf-ten, die in losemittelfreien Fertigungsprozessen fur SchielJpulver aus-genutzt werden. 

Centralit II wirkt sowohl stabilisierend als auch gelatinierend bei SchielJpulvern, die ohne fluchtige Losemittel auf der Basis von Nitrocellulose und Nitroglyzerin hergestellt werden. 

Centralit III ist gleichzeitig Stabilisator und Gelatinator in bestimmten SchielJpulvern.
