Central nervous system disorders insomnia

Most cases of mercury poisoning led to handicap, chronic disease, or death. The most frequent symptoms include numbness of limbs, lips and tongue, speech abnormalities, limb function disorders, visual acuity disorders, deafness, and muscular atrophy. Insomnia, hyperactivity, and coma have also been reported. Methylmercury penetrates the blood-brain barrier and causes central nervous system injuries. Mercury also has a teratogenic effect, leading to congenital abnormalities or congenital Minamata disease. [Pg.242]

Tranquilizers are agents that suppress or inhibit some aspects of central nervous system (CNS) activity—the brain, spinal cord, and the nerves from both— and are thus referred to as CNS depressants. Used primarily to treat insomnia as well as a wide variety of anxiety disorders, tranquilizers are among the most com-... [Pg.462]

Central nervous system. Depression and psychosis can occur during the first few days of high dose administration, especially in those with a history of mental disorder. Other effects include euphoria, insomnia, and aggravation of schizophrenia and epilepsy. Long-term treatment may result in raised intracranial pressure with papilloedema, especially in children. [Pg.668]

Central nervous system adverse effects are common with felbamate, and consist mainly of insomnia, headache, impaired concentration, ataxia, dizziness, somnolence, behavioral disturbances, and mood changes. Movement disorders, psychosis, increased seizures, status epilepticus, and withdrawal seizures are less common (SEDA-19, 67) (SEDA-20, 61). The incidence of these effects is increased in the elderly, possibly owing to reduced drug clearance (4), whereas patients with mental retardation may be more prone to behavioral disorders (SEDA-19, 68). [Pg.1329]

Irritability and aggressive behavior occur occasionally, and mentally retarded patients are possibly at greater risk (SEDA-22, 88). Rare central nervous system effects include insomnia, psychosis (SEDA-20, 63), downbeat nystagmus (SEDA-22, 89), movement disorders (SEDA-21, 72), and a Tourette-like syndrome. Lamotrigine can increase seizure frequency and severity in children with severe myoclonic epilepsy (SEDA-21, 72). [Pg.1992]

Noise is a vicious stimulus, when people are exposed to noise for a long time, the noise may stimulate the central nervous system, cause autonomic nervous system dysfunction and with the excitement and inhibition of cerebral cortex out of balance and reflex abnormalities, some symptoms appear, such as dizziness, headache, tinnitus, dreamy, insomnia, nervousness, memory loss, distraction, and even mental disorder appears in severe cases (Tian Zhou 2010, Liu 1999). [Pg.750]

Lower molecular aromatics affect the central nervous system, and are likely in small doses to engender unspecific disorders, such as lassitude, irritability, nausea, insomnia, and reduction of power of concentration and individual performance [12,198,261,262]. Several researchers have attempted to objectively correlate such forms of distress with the aid of neurophysiological and other methods [12, 263-265]. For instance, 1.5 mg benzene/m are already subliminal with respect to their effect on the electric activity of the cerebral cortex [12,264]. These threshold values... [Pg.151]

Nervous system Clonidine has been successfully used for impulsive and oppositional behavior in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder as well as for its centrally mediated sedative action when taken late in the day. A child who took clonidine for this indication had night terrors shortly after initial therapy, insomnia during attempts at drug withdrawal, and depression when the drug was finally tapered and stopped... [Pg.424]
