There is abundant field evidence for the existence of SP cells over petroleum reservoirs. Indeed this evidence itself was used to find petroleum reservoirs for almost 100 years before the cells were recognised. It includes gaseous and liquid hydrocarbon seeps, paraffin deposits, halo-type metal anomalies, iron and manganese deposition, carbonate cementation, hard-drilling areas, magnetic anomalies (associated with magnetite mineralisation) and elevated uranium concentrations (Tomkins, 1990). It is generally used with half mild or mild steels (carbon <. 4). Its purpose is to enrich in carbon the superficial metal layers by diffusion phenomenon. Silica and Alumina. The manufacture of Pordand cement is predicated on the reaction of lime with siUca and alumina to form tricalcium sihcate [12168-85-3] and aluminate. However, under certain ambient conditions of compaction with sustained optimum moisture content, lime reacts very slowly to form complex mono- and dicalcium siUcates, ie, cementitious compounds (9,10). If such a moist, compact mixture of lime and siUca is subjected to steam and pressure in an autoclave, the lime—silica reaction is greatiy accelerated, and when sand and aggregate is added, materials of concrete-like hardness are produced. Limestone does not react with siUca and alumina under any circumstances, unless it is first calcined to lime, as in the case of hydrauhc lime or cement manufacture. [Pg.168]

Hard-burned magnesias may be used in a variety of appHcations such as ceramics (qv), animal feed supplements, acid neutralization, wastewater treatment, leather (qv) tanning, magnesium phosphate cements, magnesium compound manufacturing, fertilizer, or as a raw material for fused magnesia. A patented process has introduced this material as a cation adsorbent for metals removal in wastewater treatment (132). [Pg.355]

Medicine. The polymethacrylates have been used for many years in the manufacture of dentures, teeth, denture bases, and filling materials (116,117) (see Dental materials). In the orthodontics market, methacrylates have found acceptance as sealants, or pit and fissure resin sealants which are painted over teeth and act as a barrier to tooth decay. The dimensional behavior of curing bone-cement masses has been reported (118), as has the characterization of the microstmcture of a cold-cured acryUc resin (119). Polymethacrylates are used to prepare both soft and hard contact lenses (120,121). Hydrogels based on 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate are used in soft contact lenses and other biomedical appHcations (122,123) (see Contactlenses). [Pg.271]

Niobium carbide is used as a component of hard metals, eg, mixtures of metal carbides that are cemented with cobalt, iron, and nickel. Along with tantalum carbide, niobium carbide is added to impart toughness and shock and erosion resistance. The spiraling rise in the price of tantalum has spurred the development of a hafnium carbide—niobium carbide substitute for tantalum carbide (68). These cemented carbides are used for tool bits, drill bits, shovel teeth, and other wear-resistant components turbine blades and as dies in high pressure apparatus (see Carbides). [Pg.26]

The nitrate deposits are made up of several layers (Fig. 1). The ore bodies are very heterogeneous and variable in size, thickness, composition, and hardness. The overburden may include chuca a layer of unconsoHdated sand, silt, and clay, andpanqueque a layer of semiconsoHdated and porous material poody cemented by salts over poody cemented gravel. The ore composition has degraded considerably since the eady days of the industry, when it was reported that ores of up to 50% sodium nitrate were mined.
