The cathode material, Lao.. i(Sro,4oFeo.8oCoo.2o03.6 was synthesized by spray drying method. After calcination and ball-milling, the cathode powder was screen printed on a 5x5 cm half cell with a electroMe prepared by sol-gel method, using an ethyl cellulose binder and a terpineol-based solvent . The area of the cathode layers was 4x4 cm with a thickness of about 50 pm. The cathode was dried and no sinter process was carried out before the electrochemical cell test.

The big picture in this case focuses mainly on the ability to plasticize these water-soluble polymers in the desired manner. Many plasticizers have been used and reported for both PVA and cellulose binders, but the vast majority fall into the category of Type II plasticizers. Glycerin and various glycols have been reported, and seen by the authors, to be very effective lubricants in the water-soluble tape casting systems. The earlier section on plasticizers, however, pointed out that while a Type II plasticizer is desired in some cases, the mandatory plasticizing agent found in all tapes is the Type I plasticizer or binder solvent. The requirements of a Type I plasticizer are solution of the binder polymer and low volatility. Water-soluble binders are plasticized (Type I) by water, which satisfies both of these criteria.

Cellulosic binders - Cellulose is a natural anhydroglucose polymer that is insoluble in water and all organic solvents. The cellulose esters, nitrocellulose (actually cellulose nitrate) and cellulose acetobutyrate are solvent-soluble derivatives used in coatings. 

Photolysis of HABIs as a result of UV-irradiation leads to radicals that abstract an electron from the leucodye salt, which then disproportionates to form at least one dye molecule. Visible light absorbed by the quinone converts it into a reduced derivative, which can react with the imidazolyl radical as the latter is formed. Reaction between these species is very rapid and prevents the radical from interacting with the leucodye salt. Hence, no color is formed. The quinone reduction product also interacts with the cellulosic binder, converting the initially light yellow coating to colorless. Initial studies of a preferred quinone/H-donor combination employed Carbowax. In time amine derivatives were found to be more effective.
