Cellulose Propionate CP

Cellulose propionate is the ester of cellulose with propionic acid and it is similar to cellulose acetate but with a higher plasticity. Cellulose propionate is a tough, strong, stiff, with a greater hardness that cellulose acetate and has excellent impact resistance. Articles made from it have a high gloss and are suitable for use in contact with food. [Pg.700]

Dimethyl phthalate (DMP) also has high dissolving capacity for CN. It has good compatibility with cellulose esters and are used in celluloid made fi-om CN and plastic compounds or films made from other cellulosic polymers, cellulose acetate (CA), cellulose acetate-butyrate (CAB), cellulose acetate-propionate (CAP), and cellulose propionate (CP). It is light stable but highly volatile. Diethyl phthalate (DEP) possesses properties similar to DMP and is slightly less volatile. [Pg.134]

Cellulose acetate (CA), cellulose acetobutyrate (CAB) cellulose propionate (CP), Thermoplastics manufactured from cellulose by esterification with acetic acid (CA), acetic acid and butyric acid (CAB), or propionic acid (CP). Their products are characterized by high impact strength, transparency (without filler), and oil resistance. Examples of applications consumer goods, toys, combs, keys for music instruments and business machines, spectacle frames, photographic films. CA fibres are used for underwear, neckties, etc. Trade names Cellidor (FRG), Setilithe (B), Tenite (USA). [Pg.14]

Phase behaviour and crystallisation kinetics for the binary blend P(3HB)/ cellulose propionate (CP) were studied by Maekawa and co-workers. A strong dependence of the measured Tg on composition was detected at high levels of CP. The Flory-Fox equation is one of the best equations to describe the dependence of Tg on composition in miscible blend systems. A good... [Pg.100]

Cellulose propionate (CP) and cellulose acetobutyrate (CAB) are more expensive than the acetate, but offer better dimensional stability (having lower water absorption) and improved toughness. For each ester class, a variety of grades is available, as with CA. Typical applications of CA, CP and CAB include transparent packaging, lamp shrouds and table lamps, control buttons, telephone dials, toys, tabular keys, spectacle frames and sunglasses, decorative trim for cars, and domestic appliances. Handles, from toothbrushes to cutlery and tools, and hammer heads, provide significant outlets for these plastics. [Pg.65]
