Fibers having an aspect ratio of above 10, such as glass fibers, asbestos, wollastonite, cellulose fibers, carbon fibers, and whiskers, act as reinforcing agents. Composites may be classified into four groups, as shown in Table II. In modern composites, such as in the case of epoxy resins reinforced with carbon fibers (51). the polymer matrix has only a secondary function to separate the individual fibers from one another and to transfer energy to the fiber surface the fibers almost completely withstand the mechanical load. [Pg.232]

Decomposition rate constants are negatively correlated to the total fiber content of the organic snbstrate bnt not well correlated to individual components such as cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. A field and laboratory study by Moran et al. (1989) measured the decomposition rates of whole litter and the lignocellulose components of the litter for the emergent macrophytes S. alterniflora and C. walteriana. Decomposition of individual carbon fractions varied with the rate of decomposition in the order of cellulose > hemicellulose > lignin (Figure 5.38, Moran et al., 1989). [Pg.157]

The largest and most complex carbohydrates are the polysaccharides. They are polymers, long chains of repeating chemical units. Each individual unit is called a monomer. The monomer unit of polysaccharides is the monosaccharide, normally glucose. A typical polysaccharide contains several hundred individual monomers. Examples of common polysaccharides are starches, plant products that are major macronutrients in the human diet, and cellulose, found in plant cell walls. In the human diet, cellulose is referred to as fiber, indigestible but beneficial for normal intestinal motility. Chitin is a polymer of of N-acetyl- -D-glucosamine. The linkage between individual N-acetyl-i -D-glucosamine units is / -1,4, giving it a structure similar to that of cellulose, except that the hydroxyl on carbon 2 of each residue is replaced by an acetylated amino group. [Pg.192]
