Cell enrichment

This concept is illustrated by the example shown in Table 11.1. Shown are three replicate pEC50 values for the agonist human calcitonin obtained from two types of cells wild-type HEK 293 cells and HEK 293 cell enriched with Gas-protein. The respective pECS0 values are 7.47 0.15 and 8.18 0.21. The question is Do these two estimates come from the same population That is, is there a statistically significant difference between the sensitivity of cells enriched and not enriched with GffiS-protein to human calcitonin To go further toward answering this question... [Pg.227]

Cells may show a low level of autofluorescence at 413 nm when irradiated at 324 nm. This fluorescence dramatically increases when d -parinaric acid (159) is incorporated into the cell membrane, either by intercalation or esteriflcation. Exposure to oxidation stress of cells enriched with the 159 fluorescent probe causes diminution of the fluorescence intensity and is directly correlated with formation of lipid hydroperoxides. Addition of antioxidants, such as Vitamin E (21), abates fluorescence diminution. A blanc run of cells enriched with 159 but not subjected to oxidation stress is necessary to follow the degradation of 159 when exposed to UV irradiation. This method was applied to track lipid oxidation during apoptosis and other phenomena, triggered by toxic compounds such as H2O2, f-BuOOH and cumyl hydroperoxide (27)"° 11,424... [Pg.660]

The dermis provides a base for the epidermis and contains fibroblasts that elaborate proteins, such as collagens and elastin, which are crucial for the skin s structural integrity. In addition, mast cells, enriched in a variety of proinflammatory substances, play an important role in tissue remodeling, wound healing, and fibrosis. [Pg.486]

Cell-enrichment processes not using fluorescent or magnetic technology are based on cell physicochemical properties, such as density, size, electrophoretic mobility, or surface composition (phenotype) (1). One of the earliest and still most commonly used methods is based on the use of centrifugal force to exploit density differences and deplete erythrocytes from whole blood. Further... [Pg.318]

Hordeumin, a purple anthocyanin-tannin pigment, was extracted from barley bran-fermented broth and was shown to scavenge superoxide radicals in a concentration-dependent manner. Hordeumin had also an antimutagenicity effect [71,72]. Endothelial cells enriched with elderberry anthocyanins exhibited significant protective effects against oxidative stressors such as hydrogen peroxide, 2,2/-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride, and iron(II) sulfate/ascorbic acid [55]. [Pg.59]

Fig. 16.7. Triberg yeasts, (a) Colony of round and oval-shaped yeast cells enriched in a small pocket in a granite fracture in the vicinity of the haematite-covered mycelia. The yeast cells are preserved in a yellow to orange colour. Electron dispersive X-ray analyses of the cellular wall found an enrichment of carbon. Many yeast cells are completely covered with small haematite crystals and therefore exhibit an opaque optical character, (b) In a few tight fractures the yeast cells are part of microbial biofilms. In such fractures mycelia networks are not present. Fig. 16.7. Silicon will serve as the paradigmatic example of slip in covalent materials. Recall that Si adopts the diamond cubic crystal structure, and like in the case of fee materials, the relevant slip system in Si is associated with 111 planes and 110> slip directions. However, because of the fact that the diamond cubic structure is an fee lattice with a basis (or it may be thought of as two interpenetrating fee lattices), the geometric character of such slip is more complex just as we found that, in the case of intermetallics, the presence of more than one atom per unit cell enriches the sequence of possible slip mechanisms. [Pg.381]
