Table 5.22 indicates the test references to be conducted on engines according to procedures established by the Coordinating European Council (CEC). Note that these are long-duration tests, some lasting dozens or even hundreds of hours and they are costly.

The RA 25 contract has been extended by CEC and renumbered RA 100 in order to continue this exercise with the ISO 1182 apparatus. However, the major part of the work of the RA 100 group will be the preparation of unified test reports for each of the test methods, which will ensure that all the necessary details are recorded to enable a product to be classified in any of the EEC Member States. Although Fields already mentioned the possible preparation of monolithic silica-based CEC columns, the lack of experimental data leads to the assumption that this option has not been tested [111]. The sorption behavior of 11 PAH compounds (a training set, Table 11) on various solid phases (e.g., three soils and two sediments) with different properties to relevant sorption (e.g., organic carbon content, clay content, pH, cation exchange capacity CEC Table 12), was determined by batch equilibrium studies [1]. Batch equilibrium tests were designed to determine rates of equilibrium sorption under conditions of high mixing and high surface areas of the solid particles (see Chap. 3). 

Another remarkable fact is that the number of published papers largely depends on the maturity of the technique and its frequency of use in the industry. For example, CE and HPLC are widely accepted techniques and take the majority of papers for their account, while CEC, a rather immature technique, and SFC, a less frequently applied one, are much less studied. Therefore, CE and HPLC can be recommended as the two techniques to be tested in a first instance, using either CD or polysaccharide CSP, respectively. 

A detailed discussion of the above topics together with a selection of class projects and test calculations is given in Chapter 7 of Rowell (1994, pp. 131-152), but note his calculation of CEC has an error in that it is based on 250 ml KCI extract, not on 100 ml as per given methodology, and thus requires correction (confirmed by personal communication, 2001). Directions for using the Eoss/Perstorp Analytical Tecator Kjeltec Auto 1035/1038 Sample System for CEC determinations are given in USDA, 1996 (pp. 203-210). 

The simulated filter plugging point (SFPP) was developed in Europe as a supplement to the CFPP test. Work initiated in 1982 by the Coordinating European Council (CEC) demonstrated that the CFPP can become unreliable whenever the CFPP is lowered more than 50°F (10°C) below the cloud point of the fuel. The SFPP was developed to better predict the operability of fuel at temperatures >50 °F (>10°C) below the fuel cloud point.
