In practice the laser can operate only when n, in Equation (9.2), takes values such that the corresponding resonant frequency v lies within the line width of the transition between the two energy levels involved. If the active medium is a gas this line width may be the Doppler line width (see Section 2.3.2). Figure 9.3 shows a case where there are twelve axial modes within the Doppler profile. Cyclodextrins are macrocyclic compounds comprised of D-glucose bonded through 1,4-a-linkages and produced enzymatically from starch. The greek letter which proceeds the name indicates the number of glucose units incorporated in the CD (eg, a = 6, /5 = 7, 7 = 8, etc). Cyclodextrins are toroidal shaped molecules with a relatively hydrophobic internal cavity (Fig. 6). The exterior is relatively hydrophilic because of the presence of the primary and secondary hydroxyls. The primary C-6 hydroxyls are free to rotate and can partially block the CD cavity from one end. The mouth of the opposite end of the CD cavity is encircled by the C-2 and C-3 secondary hydroxyls. Vacuum Radiation Furnaces. Vacuum furnaces are used where the work can be satisfactorily processed only in a vacuum or in a protective atmosphere. Most vacuum furnaces use molybdenum heating elements. Because all heat transfer is by radiation, metal radiation shields ate used to reduce heat transfer to the furnace casing. The casing is water-cooled and a sufficient number of radiation shields between the inner cavity and the casing reduce the heat flow to the casing to a reasonable level.
