Cavitation appearance

Hydrodynamic cavitation reactors have been investigated for more than a decade now in the UDCT Department of Bombay University [63-66]. When applied to some industrially relevant reactions, the hydrodynamically created cavitation appeared to dehver on average an order of magnitude higher cavitation yields than the acoustic cavitation. In addition, the processing volumes could be up to about 100 times larger than in the conventional sonochemical reactors. So far, there is no information about the industrial applications of the hydrodynamic cavitation reactors, although some concepts have already been patented [67]. [Pg.299]

Cavitation and Flashing From the discussion on pressure recoveiy it was seen that the pressure at the vena contracta can be much lower than the downstream pressure. If the pressure on a hquid falls below its vapor pressure (p,J, the liquid will vaporize. Due to the effect of surface tension, this vapor phase will first appear as bubbles. These bubbles are carried downstream with the flow, where they collapse if the pressure recovers to a value above p,. This pressure-driven process of vapor-bubble formation and collapse is known as cavitation. [Pg.789]

No detailed tests have been reported for the performance of propeller calandrias. Not enough is known regarding the performance of the propellers themselves under the cavitating conditions usually encountered to permit predicting circulation rates. In many cases, it appears that the propeller does no good in accelerating heat transfer over the transfer Tor natural circffiation (Fig. 11-23). [Pg.1045]

Generation Spontaneous generation of gas bubbles within a homogeneous liquid is theoreticaUy impossible (Bikerman, Foams Theoiy and Industrial Applications, Reinhold, New York, 1953, p. 10). The appearance of a bubble requires a gas nucleus as avoid in the liquid. The nucleus may be in the form of a small bubble or of a solid carrying adsorbed gas, examples of the latter being dust particles, boiling chips, and a solid wall. A void can result from cavitation, mechan-ic ly or acoustically induced. Blander and Katz [AlChE J., 21, 833 (1975)] have thoroughly reviewed bubble nucleation in liquids. [Pg.1416]

Cavitation produces spongy, porous-appearing surfaces, strongly resembling acid attack. However, cavitation usually causes highly localized areas of metal loss, unlike acid, which attacks over a much wider area. [Pg.176]

Examination of the microstructure of the cavitated surface will commonly disclose evidence of deformation such as twins (Neumann hands) in carbon steel and general cold working in other metals (Case History 12.6). Damage from cavitation can be differentiated from attack by a strong mineral acid, which can produce a similar surface appearance, by observing the highly specific areas of attack characteristic of cavitation. Acid attack is typically general in its extent (Case History 12.6). [Pg.277]

Examination of surface profiles in these pitted regions under a high-power microscope revealed jagged, undercut profiles free of deposits or corrosion products. This appearance is typical of cavitation damage. [Pg.289]

Note that localized corrosion having the appearance illustrated in Figs. 12.18 through 12.20 could be associated with brief exposure to a strong acid. In this case, however, all available information indicated that the tubes had never been exposed to an acid of any type. Cavitation was caused by high-frequency vibration of the tubes. The vibration apparently induced a threshold cavitation intensity such that rough or irregular surfaces produced cavitation bubbles, and smooth internal surfaces did not. [Pg.290]

The pump has experienced graphitic corrosion. Figures 17.10, 17.12, and 17.14 illustrate typical appearances of graphitically corroded cast iron. In addition, cavitation damage (see Chap. 12) has produced severe metal loss in specific areas (see Fig. 17.13). The soft, friable corrosion products produced by graphitic corrosion are susceptible to cavitation damage at relatively low levels of cavitation intensity. [Pg.385]

The evidence of this type of cavitation manifests itself like vaporization cavitation, or inadequate NPSHa. The damage to the impeller appears like vaporization cavitation. However, the solution is different. [Pg.34]

First, one pump running in a parallel system tends to suffer from cavitation because operation to the right of the BF.P indicates that the NPSHr of the pump rises drastically. To survive this condition, you should use dual mechanical seals on these pumps. Dual or double mechanical seals can withstand cavitation better than a single seal. There is a discussion on this in the mechanical seal chapter of this book. Many engineers perceive that parallel pumps are problematic becau.se they appear to suffer a lot of premature seal failure. Parallel pumps deserve double seals even if it s only a cold water system. [Pg.123]

Normal reheat treatment can partially restore blade properties however, it does not appear to be capable of full property recovery, although the miscrostructures are comparable to new blades. This shortcoming implies that cavitation may be present and was not removed by conventional reheat treatment. Hot isostatic press (HIP) processing is an alternative that ensures void removal. Provided that the system is initially clean and fitted with efficient air filters, metal edge-strainers of 0.005-inch spacing appear to be adequate, although clearances of vane pumps may be below 0.001-inch. Very rapid and highly localised pitting is sometimes observed on components exposed to very turbulent flow conditions leading to cavitation in the stream. In general, these conditions appear to induce corrosion rather than erosion on cast iron surfaces, in contradistinction to what usually happens with other metals, apparently because the erosive component of the liquid flow scours away corrosion-stifling films and allows the development of very active electrochemical cells on the exposed metal surfaces . [Pg.591]

The final estimation of the value of ay may appear tedious and several assumptions are made in its derivation, but experimental evidence suggests that it may be used with reasonable accuracy to assess the levels of potentially damaging cavitation erosion. In small valves with nominal bores up to 65 mm cavitation inception occurs in intermittent bursts when the value oy is approximately unity. The cavitation becomes continuous and audible as Oy is reduced to about 0.6, but the risk of damage does not become significant until the value falls below 0.4.
