A study of the biosynthesis of caulerpenyne by Caulerpa taxifolia has shown that it involves only the DXP/MEP pathway (Pohnert and Jung, 2003). It was later established that the biosynthesis of all terpenes of Chlorophyceae would be conducted exclusively by this nonmevalonic acid pathway inside the chloroplasts (Schwender, Gemiinden, and Lichtenthaler, 2004). This feature makes it possible to distinguish between Chlorophyceae and Charophyceae ° and terrestrial plants that possess both biosynthesis pathways. [Pg.297]

Two cytokinins, zeatin and a related derivative, were respectively characterized in Caulerpa taxifolia and Udotea indica (Farooki, Shukla, and Bhakuni, 1990). A strange derivative of sym-triazine, halimedin, has been isolated from the Chinese species Halimeda xishaensis and characterized using X-ray spectroscopy (Su et al., 1998). An iodinated derivative of tyrosine related to the thyroid hormones, tetraiodotyrosine, has been isolated from the polar fraction of Cladophora densa (Okano, Fukamiya, and Aratani, 1982). [Pg.302]
